Role Overview:
Designs, implements and evaluates strategically aligned programs that contribute to the orientation and ongoing competence of staff (RNs, LVNs, CNAs, Techs, and others who support clinical activity). Responsible for clinical education and training programs designed to meet the learning and development needs of staff throughout the continuum of care. This may include one or several areas of clinical specialty, e.g., Medical-Surgical, Perioperative, Critical Care, LTC. It may also include HIT (Healthcare IT) expertise across the full range of patient, organizational, and individual applications in use, and it may include training in skills essential to working effectively in a fast-paced public hospital and ambulatory care environment. Performs related duties as required.
DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.
- Assists with advertising and marketing inservice, continuing education credit courses and other learning opportunities; may include calendars, brochures, flyers, emails, etc.
- Balances the need to deliver education programs with the need to work within budget.
- Collaborates and coordinates with other departments and/or external vendors, as appropriate, to develop and deliver education programs.
- Collaborates with managers, physicians and Nursing Administration to identify and prioritize learning and competency needs, to improve quality and efficiency throughout the continuum of clinical care.
- Designs education programs that consider adult learning theory and utilizes the best learning solution, such as online, instructor-led or a blend to meet the needs of auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners.
- Designs, implements and evaluates programs to meet the prioritized learning and competency needs of staff.
- Develops and/or participates in development of annual clinical education program and competencies including inservice and continuing education credit courses for staff.
- Develops, maintains and evaluates the core curriculum for general clinical orientation to meet regulatory, statutory and institutional requirements.
- Insures appropriate documentation of education programs; maintains course records to document employee participation and to comply with regulatory requirements.
- Organizes, presents and completes documentation for inservice education for the use of new equipment and products.
- Plans and presents education programs for Medical Center staff in clinical specialty areas: Perioperative, Critical Care, Emergency Department, Medical-Surgical, or Psychiatry, hospital clinics and community clinics. For LTC: presents and educates programs to clinical staff, medical providers on site-specific infection control programs, infection control and safety policies and LTC residents' rights to all LTC facility staff including but not limited to LTC requirements.
- Plans and presents education programs for staff in information technology specialty areas: desktop applications, healthcare applications, general Medical Center applications.
- Seeks professional development opportunities to update clinical theory and practice knowledge and to keep abreast of new trends in education methods and concepts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in nursing; MSN or MS degree preferred. For LTC: RN Director of Staff Development by the State of CA.
Minimum Experience: Six months to one year as a clinical instructor in a hospital or academic setting.
Minimum Experience: Two-five years clinical experience in the area of expertise.
Required Licenses/Certifications: ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification - issued by AHA - American Heart Association. For LTC: ACLS not required.
Required Licenses/Certifications: BLS - Basic Life Support Certification - issued by AHA-American Heart Association.
Required Licenses/Certifications: PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification- AHA American Heart Association (Required for Emergency Department or if overseeing or providing pediatric care on a regular basis). For LTC: PALS not required.
Required Licenses/Certifications: Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California. For LTC must have California licensure and Director of Staff Development certification (must obtain within six months of employment).
