Position: Assistant Professor of Animal Science with specialization in Microbiome and/or Bacterial Immunology; 12-month, tenure-track; 80% Research (Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station) and 20% Teaching (Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences); appointment in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Develop a nationally-competitive and extramurally-funded research program focused on improving sustainable animal production, enhancing efficiency of food production, nutrient retention, and qualities of human food products, and the effect of the gut microbiome population and/or function in this system.
- Coalesce the core groups of expertise currently in the Department of Animal Science, which includes 8 faculty involved in nutrition/forages, 5 faculty with emphasis in physiology/genetics, and 2 veterinarians.
- Interface with animal health industry personnel, spanning those in production agriculture through those in relevant aspects of animal health technology to develop cross-spectrum industry collaboration in conducting research, implementing findings, and contributing to departmental outreach programs.
- Develop and participate in interdisciplinary and inter-institutional/agency research collaboration to address research issues.
- Secure extramural funding from a variety of sources including federal, state, industry, and private sources.
Required Qualifications: An earned doctorate in Animal Science, Microbiology, Immunology, or a related doctoral degree with emphasis on the effect of gut microbiome population on animal efficiency. Demonstrated excellence in conducting and publishing high-impact research, developing an independent research program, and collaborating within interdisciplinary teams of scientists. Strong speaking and writing communication skills are required. Selected candidates are expected to be active in the department’s graduate program, including mentoring and directing graduate students as their major faculty advisor and serving as a member of student advisory committees. The selected candidate will be asked to recruit and educate students through academic programs in Animal Science and should have a strong commitment to undergraduate training, as well as participating in departmental activities. Courses may be developed or assigned by the department head based on the candidate’s expertise and departmental curriculum needs, including developing an introductory course in Animal Microbiome and co-instruction/contribution to 2-3 courses within the department including ‘Analytical Methods’, and development of a graduate level data analytics/techniques course. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in fundamental research that encompasses molecular to organismal levels and has application to livestock animals. Experience in successful grant writing and relevant post-doctoral studies are preferred.
