I. Major Responsibilities:
- Assist with all aspects of patient clinic visit includes: rooming patients, performing intake assessment with appropriate medical record documentation, preparation of patient for clinician evaluation, dressing changes, suture/staple removal as directed.
- Takes and records vital signs including blood pressures, temperature, pulse, respiration, weights, height, etc. Collects and transports specimens to appropriate departments.
- Performs cast work for arms, hands, legs, body casts, bi-valve casts, corrective casts, cast wedging, brace molding and splinting with plaster and fiberglass materials. Instructs patients in cast care.
- Sets up, applies, maintains and removes traction and suspension devices. Assists with the transport and transfer of patients in and out of skeletal traction. Coordinates patient's ambulating status with physical therapy staff and adjusts length, foot strike and fit as needed.
- Applies and adjusts orthopedic leg and arm braces, canes and crutches, and prefabricated fracture braces. Instructs patients in gait training.
II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
- One of the following is required upon hire or transfer:
- Certified Nursing Assistant license in MA.
- Medical Assistant credential administered by a recognized school accredited by the Department of Health or a program approved by UMMMC (ARMA, etc.).
- Certified with the National Board of Orthopedic Technologists (NBCOT) or registered with the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP). If not credentialed as a Medical Assistant, all employees must obtain a Medical Assistant credential within 6 months of hire or transfer date. All employees must maintain the credential.
- BLS certification.
Experience/Skills:
- Knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology is required.
- Strong computer skills required for use of EMR.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required to gather information from individuals, build relationships that support collaborative work within the department and across the organization, and provide exceptional service to patients.
Preferred:
- Minimum of two years of related patient care experience.
- Experience including exposure to cast application and removal.
- Demonstrated ability with cast and traction set up.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
