Boston Children's Hospital is looking for a Technician to work in a busy atmosphere. We are offering a $5000 sign on bonus for this 40 hours a week position. All Technicians MUST have the PTCB or NHA certification.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs quality control checks of medication orders and doses distributed following established procedures and schedules.
- May input patient medication orders on departmental computer system, ensuring that orders are verified by a pharmacist prior to dispensing.
- Provides training to new technicians in job duties, procedures, and techniques.
- Monitors and documents trainee performance, identifying areas for improvement and reports to designated pharmacist/lead technician and/or pharmacy technician supervisor.
- Fills and delivers medication orders/prescriptions for hospital inpatients and outpatients. Fills standing inpatient medication orders in individual cassettes following computer-generated lists and fills new orders/prescriptions from physician orders.
- Delivers cassettes and individual medications to units and collects new medication orders according to established procedures and schedules.
- Prepares patient medications in accordance with established protocols, methods, and techniques.
- Measures, mixes, and compounds automated TPNs, irrigations, chemotherapy drugs, and parenteral and oral medications in specified volumes, dosages, and concentrations.
- Prepares special dilutions of non-controlled and controlled substances, IV, and research study medications as needed. Labels and records manufactured medications as required.
- Receives and fills pharmaceutical supply requests for nursing units, satellite locations, and other areas.
- Monitors, restocks, and rotates supplies, including controlled substances, removing and replacing outdated products, and processing related patient charges and credits.
- Restocks emergency code cart trays and prepares and maintains corresponding logs and records.
- Assists nursing staff in completing scheduled controlled substance inventory.
- Performs all automated dispensing functions. Provides training to new technicians in job duties, procedures, and techniques.
- Prepares and maintains related logs and records.
- Maintains neatness and organization of work area.
- Answers, screens, and routes telephone calls as needed.
- Refers any medical/drug information questions or administrative inquiries to the pharmacist.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to operate independently.
- Ability to apply effective techniques and processes resulting in nearly zero errors or defects.
- Extensive knowledge of complex hospital medication use system.
- Ability to recognize and escalate problems.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Proficient knowledge of basic computer skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Non-sterile compounding path.
- Pediatric pharmaceutical calculations.
- Complex Non-sterile compounding AND/OR Sterile compounding path.
- Pediatric pharmaceutical calculations.
- Sterile compounding.
- Patient-specific sterile refill batch fulfillment, patient-specific new sterile order fulfillment.
- At least one of the following: Non-patient specific ICU batch fill, ED Pharmacy Tech, Infusion Clinic, parenteral nutrition or chemotherapy.
Requirements:
- Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician by the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
- Current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or National Healthcare Association.
- Completion of a Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy approved training program or a minimum of 500 hours worked as a pharmacy technician trainee.
