Position Description
The Weiss Lab at the Helen Diller Family Cancer Center at UCSF is seeking a talented, motivated, and energetic individual looking to gain experience in academic research in a dynamic and diverse lab environment. Specifically, we are seeking a Junior or Assistant Specialist who will join a team of scientists using mouse and cell-based model systems to understand the mechanisms by which proto-oncogenes create immunosuppressive tumor microenvironments in pediatric tumors. Candidates will perform molecular biology techniques, assist in culturing and analyzing cancer cells, and analyze RNA and protein expression using qPCR analysis, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, and Western blotting. The specialist will also work with mice, performing surgery and drug treatments. Candidates will have the opportunity to present at lab meetings, career development seminars, and conferences, earn authorships on publications where they contribute data, and will assist in lab management duties. This is an ideal position to gain experience in both basic science and translational research and is suited for those who have a desire to pursue an advanced degree in the biological sciences or medicine.
The Weiss lab is a collaborative environment where individuals from all stages of scientific training learn from one another, including scientists and clinician-scientists who aim to translate basic discoveries into new therapies for pediatric patients impacted by high-risk nervous system tumors. This specialist will work directly with a post-doctoral scholar, who will serve as a direct scientific and career mentor.
