The Laboratory Manager oversees and coordinates the operation of the laboratories at 1 Care Lane, supporting the activities of the faculty and students. The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the facility including student supervision, management of resources and materials, maintenance of equipment, developing one’s own expertise, and supporting efforts in recruitment. Additionally, the laboratory manager at the University of New Haven is responsible for managing all health, safety and logistical requirements for laboratory facilities within their respective department in conjunction with Environmental Health and Safety, department chair, and faculty. Specific duties are outlined below.
You will:
The laboratory manager in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and Wellness at 1 Care Lane is responsible for managing all health and safety and logistical requirements for laboratory facilities in the department in conjunction with the Chair and faculty.
- Supervision
- Responsible for preparedness of labs, and monitors labs when in session. Oversee use of labs at all times during which scheduled lab courses are not in session.
- Train and supervise lab student assistant employees in preparation of assisting with the handling of laboratory supplies and equipment.
- Resource Management
- Provides centralized assistance for department purchasing and management of purchase records.
- Works with program directors and faculty to determine equipment purchase priorities based on teaching needs, condition of existing equipment, scheduled laboratory activities and budget allowances.
- Coordinates use of department facilities by outside groups in conjunction with department chair.
- Develop, coordinate, and maintain laboratory supplies and equipment inventories.
- Participate in long-range planning and budgeting processes; project personnel and equipment needs; maintain spreadsheets to calculate and monitor the laboratory budget.
- Assist faculty and the office for Grants and Sponsored Programs in the preparation of grant-related documentation including tracking of activities, inventories, expenses, and data management for periodic reports.
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of apparatus and equipment.
- Develop and administer maintenance schedule for major items, as required.
- Perform minor repairs and arrange/supervise outside repair services.
- Assess general labs needs and recommend acquisitions as needed.
- Participate in the development of laboratory manuals.
- Verify accuracy and approve all invoices for payment. Manage all charging errors, credits, refunds and personal P-card spending.
- Submit student information to Student Employment Office for hiring.
- Equipment/Materials Maintenance
- Supervise maintenance & service of laboratory instrumentation.
- Works with chair and faculty on issues concerning the physical design and modification of the laboratory space.
- Responsible for specification, installation, testing, and repair of all types of lab equipment used by the Department in a safe, and efficient manner.
- Diagnoses cause of electrical or mechanical malfunction or failure of operational equipment and preventive and corrective maintenance.
- Maintain files of equipment records, operating manuals and equipment specifications.
- Contact equipment suppliers and write purchase requisitions.
- Develop and maintain lists of suppliers and pricing information.
- Arrange for delivery or moving of laboratory equipment.
- Ensure that each piece of equipment borrowed for use in another lab is returned to where it belongs.
- Professional Development
- The Lab Manager is to stay current with safety requirements and identify, develop, and carry out actions needed to maintain compliance.
- Maintain current knowledge of advances in laboratory technology; federal and state regulations; attend seminars, lectures, meetings, and professional conferences.
- Environmental Health & Safety
- Enforce the University of New Haven Laboratory Safety Policy. Laboratory Manager shall report all major and/or reoccurring safety concerns to Environmental Health and Safety as well as Dept. Chair.
- Serves as Laboratory Safety Officer, ensuring compliance with current safety requirements as well as maintenance of facilities and instrumentation.
- Is responsible for collecting and maintaining Material Safety Data Sheets.
- Manages collection and disposal of regulated wastes in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Purchases all chemicals for research and department needs according to the University’s chemical procurement guidelines.
- Ensure personal protective equipment (PPE) is available to all employees of the department.
- Works in conjunction with program directors; develops and maintains appropriate control and quality assurance procedures; ensures compliance with current safety requirements; coordinates laboratory activities with other state and federal agencies and entities.
- Schedule and/or provide training as needed for all full and part-time faculty, graduate assistants and others working in the laboratories in the areas of laboratory safety, procedures related to lab maintenance and other training as required to maintain compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The Lab Manager is to stay current with such requirements and identify, develop, and carry out actions needed to maintain compliance.
- Responsible for all proper documentation and record keeping related to laboratory procedures, safety training and safety incident reports.
- Performs quarterly laboratory safety and hazardous waste inspections.
- Other Responsibilities
- Participate as a member of the University Health and Safety Committee (a committee composed of representatives from various departments within the college in order to review and develop safety policies and procedures for the institution).
- Keep records of laboratory access permissions and key distribution, and acts as liaison to Campus Police and Buildings and Grounds Department regarding laboratory issues. Submit all badge access requests for dept.
- Ensure proper reporting of accident & near miss events to EHS email: EHS.safety@newhaven.edu.
- Responsible for oversight of BSL-1 and BSL-2 labs and manages recertification inspections of dept. BSL-2 labs every 2 years.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
You need:
- MS with relevant experience or BS degree with 3-5 years relevant experience in health sciences or related discipline.
- Familiar with local, state and federal regulations with regard to environmental safety and health.
- Effective in decision making and problem solving.
- Knowledgeable in the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Experience in preparing student laboratories.
- Supervisory experience.
- Strong computer skills.
- Well organized and able to handle multiple tasks/activities simultaneously, perform with minimal supervision.
- Good interpersonal skills; ability to work closely with faculty, staff, and students.
- Enjoys a highly diverse and challenging work environment, and should be willing to learn new things.
