Responsible for performance of all speech-language, communicative, and swallowing diagnostic and rehabilitative procedures on inpatients and outpatients; specifically, conducts evaluations and analyzes the results to diagnose the disorder; recommends and conducts appropriate rehabilitation intervention; counsels the patient and family (as approved by the patient) as to the current status of the patient and plans appropriate intervention to address the specific needs of the patient; writes reports on all diagnostic and rehabilitative procedures in the EMR.
Responsibilities
- Clinical
- Able to interpret physician referrals to perform basic clinical evaluations.
- All patient care responsibilities will be performed consistent with age-specific criteria (see attached).
- Demonstrates technical skill and accuracy in performing basic treatments.
- Develops population specific treatment programs which reflect compliance with established clinical protocols where appropriate, monitors patient responses and terminates treatments when appropriate.
- Sets measurable and appropriate goals which reflect patient/family involvement and seeks appropriate assistance.
- Provides patient and family education.
- Initiates and maintains current records and reports concerning patient course, re-evaluates and updates goals, and plans as necessary, based on patient's response to treatment.
- Uses equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Reports malfunctioning or missing equipment to supervisor and takes corrective action to remove equipment from use.
- Assumes responsibility for order of working areas.
- Maintains a high standard of professional accountability with respect to safety, efficiency, effectiveness, ethics and legal issues.
- Demonstrates compliance with all hospital standards and regulations.
- Participates constructively in team conferences, rounds, clinics, and discharge planning, as appropriate.
- Utilizes Assistant and support staff and volunteers appropriately in the delivery of patient care.
- Educational
- Attends department in-services.
- Assists with orientation of staff as appropriate.
- Assists in orientation, education and guidance of support staff.
- Seeks opportunities to expand own knowledge of the profession and related fields.
- Meets required standards for documentation of attended inservices and Continuing Contact hours when applicable.
- Administration
- Complies with Hospital and Department Policies and Procedures.
- Participates in department Quality Assurance activities.
- Plans and organizes daily schedule optimally to use time.
- Appropriately addresses patient coverage issues for scheduled time off.
- Carries patient load that reflects productivity standard of unit.
- Maintains documentation in accordance with hospital policy and regulatory requirements (HCFA, JCAHO, etc.).
- Clinical Supervision
- Participates in regular meetings with supervisor and/or team leader and reports pertinent information on a timely basis.
- Appropriately delegates responsibility to students and CFY's as required and maintains appropriate level of clinical supervision.
- Reports directly to area supervisor and indirectly to team leader.
- Provides clinical supervision to students as assigned.
- Human Relations Skills
- Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsive and courteous hospital environment.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology; Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology completed.
EXPERIENCE
One (1) to two (2) years as a clinical speech language pathologist in a large medical center based practice preferred. Experience working with children and/or adults depending on the assigned setting. Clinical experience with a variety of diagnoses to include post-surgical, developmental, neurological, genetic, oncologic and traumatic.
LICENSURE
Must maintain a current unrestricted license to practice as a Speech-Language Pathologist in CT.
SPECIAL SKILLS
Experience with FEES, MBS and TEP preferred. Excellent interpersonal, clinical, and organizational skills.
