MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A master's degree in epidemiology plus four years of professional level experience in epidemiology.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
A master's degree in public health, which included twelve hours in epidemiology, biostatistics, tropical medicine, maternal and child health, occupational health, international health, community health, or any combination, will substitute for the master's degree in epidemiology only.
A master's degree in nursing, a social science, a biological science, or a behavioral science, which included twelve semester hours in epidemiology and/or biostatistics or a combination, will substitute for the master's degree in epidemiology only.
A doctorate degree in veterinary medicine, which included twelve semester hours in epidemiology and/or biostatistics or a combination, will substitute for the master's degree in epidemiology only.
A doctorate degree in epidemiology will substitute for two years of the required experience.
NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
Function of Work:
To design, plan, evaluate and oversee the conducting of epidemiological activities related to collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data about health events in order to assess and help assure the health and safety of Louisiana citizens.

This Public Health Epidemiologist Manager is a high-level technical position. This position is assigned to the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Section and is responsible for statewide Vaccine-Preventable (VPD) and Respiratory disease (VRD) surveillance and epidemiologic response. This position supervises four subordinates (2 PH Epidemiologist Specialists and 2 PH Epidemiologists). This position will be supervised by the Program Manager 2.
Responsibilities:
- 25% Management of Complex Surveillance System for Vaccine-Preventable and Respiratory diseases:
- Plans, organizes, and directs the statewide vaccine-preventable and respiratory disease surveillance programs, including but not limited to COVID-19, MIS-C, Influenza, RSV, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, and Varicella.
- Serves as statewide VPD and VRD surveillance manager, managing epidemiologic data collection and training of field staff.
- Manages all VPD and VRD outbreak investigations, directing regional field operations and mobilization of additional resources as needed.
- Establishes collaborative relationships with reporting facilities and key stakeholders at the state and national level.
- Develops and implements long-range plans, surveillance procedures, and policies for conducting VPD and VRD surveillance across the state.
- 25% Evaluation of Epidemiologic Data:
- Evaluates epidemiologic data to guide agency administration in program and policy development.
- Provides oversight to epidemiologist specialists and program monitors in the design of intervention studies, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
- 15% Grant Management:
- Oversees preparation of the vaccine-preventable and respiratory disease components of the Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) grant.
- Monitors grant activity execution and progress.
- 10% Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Oversees epidemiology staff coordinating day-to-day operations of the surveillance program.
- Hires or approves hiring of subordinate program staff.
- 10% Direction of Epidemiologic Services in Health Emergencies:
- Plans and coordinates epidemiological services in health emergencies.
- Oversees implementation of disaster-related prevention and control activities.
- 10% Data Presentation:
- Presents epidemiological data to legislators, communities, and other agencies.
- Assists in preparing epidemiologic data analysis for legislative justification.
