The Surgical Technologist TTWP (operating room scrub technician) sets up sterile field, gathers supplies for surgical cases, based on knowledge of instruments and equipment to be used. This position passes instruments to surgeons during surgery and performs count procedures per policy during surgical cases.
The Surgical Technologist TTWP serves as a resource and preceptor to less experienced Surgical Technologists and takes call for routine and high acuity cases after the orientation period. This role also learns, performs and completes assignments/responsibilities assigned during the transitional duty period.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Registered by the State Board of Medicine and Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C) or Certified Operating Room or Surgical Technician (CORST) certification.
Certification or Registration Requirement for Continued Employment:
Registration by the Virginia State Board of Medicine, Current AHA, BLS, HCP Certification Current CST; TS-C or CORST required.
Experience REQUIRED:
Minimum of 6 months experience as a Surgical Technologist or related scrub tech position.
Experience PREFERRED:
2 years experience as a surgical technologist or related scrub technician position.
Education/training REQUIRED:
High School Diploma or equivalent Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program or a military training program or Licensed Practical Nursing Program.
Education/training PREFERRED:
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program.
Independent action(s) required:
Functions under the direction of RN or independent practitioner in providing direct patient care, emotional support and problem solving, all in accordance with hospital, nursing and unit policies and procedures.
Requires prior approval or guidance from supervisor for time/schedule changes, legal issues, direct care which deviates from the standard and identification of educational resources to meet developmental needs.
Job duties may include:
Handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.

Additional position requirements:
Surgical Technologists work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with employee's specific Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator. Schedules, including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing requirements or in the best interests of the work unit. Takes independent call for routine or high acuity cases after the orientation period.
