The Pathologists’ Assistant performs a wide variety of tasks in processing human surgical pathology specimens under the supervision of the Anatomic Pathology Operations Manager. Responsibilities include gross description and dissection, submitting appropriate diagnostic sections, and reviewing cases at sign-out with a pathologist when necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- Organizes Grossing Room workflow and redirects focus of residents, grossing technicians, and other technical staff as needed.
- Monitors the intake of surgical specimens and ensures appropriate assignment to staff.
- Coordinates PA and technical staff schedules for adequate weekday coverage.
- Performs gross description and dissection of surgical pathology specimens, submits diagnostic sections, and reviews cases with a pathologist as necessary.
- Provides formal instruction for Grossing Technicians and/or residents in surgical pathology technique.
- Contributes to PA staff competency assessments.
- Maintains diagnostic viability of specimens and ensures correct patient labeling.
- Assists in frozen section examination and prepares tissue for diagnostic study.
- Photographs and x-rays specimens for diagnostic study, research, and clinical studies.
- Triages tissue for different types of fixation or special studies.
- Enters patient medical record information into the laboratory information system.
- Assists in maintaining a clean and organized work area in compliance with safety regulations.
- Acts as an on-site resource for supply and service issues.
- Troubleshoots QA/QI problems related to specimen processing.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree from NAACLS accredited program required.
- AAPA approved Pathologists’ Assistant Training Program.
- PA(ASCP) certification required; recent graduates must obtain certification within 1 calendar year from program completion.
- 1-2 years' experience preferred.
