Wood is seeking a Training and Competence Lead for our Operations Americas BU . Based out of our office in Houston, TX, the Training & Competence Lead is responsible for ensuring the safe and effective delivery of technical training and competence programs across our client sites. This role focuses on the robust and proactive management of workforce competence, including the assessment, verification, recording, and reporting of technical skills and mandatory safety training courses and certification. The Manager leads a team of training and competence advisors to ensure that operational leaders have clear visibility into the capabilities of the workforce.
Key Responsibilities :
- Responsible for the delivery of all technical training and competency delivery across the region/business unit
- Responsible for the Training & Competence Assurance Management Systems and programs, providing global input and ownership where required
- Responsible for the alignment of all regions regarding training and competence
- Accountable for the management of the assessment and verification of competence, records, and evidence
- Continuous improvement of training & competence assurance systems and processes
- Oversight of mandatory / minimum training compliance management, monitoring, and reporting
- Ownership of training and competence-related procedures and processes
- Interface manager and contract owner for 3rd party training providers
- Stays abreast of changes in relevant statutory / mandatory requirements and ensures internal processes remain compliant
- Provide operational leaders with real-time visibility into workforce competence, monitoring gaps and ensuring robust remediation strategies.
- Act as the product owner for training programs for Operations Americas, determining the training and competence requirements for trade and craft populations.
- Lead the development and implementation of apprenticeship programs with technical colleges and schools, ensuring alignment with business needs and creating sustainable talent pipelines.
- Serve as the quality assurer for apprenticeship programs, including oversight of licensing and certifications.
- Continuously assess workforce skills and demand pipelines to ensure technical capability and readiness across the region.
Requirements :
- Strong leadership and team management skills with experience overseeing advisors, assessors, and external training providers.
- Knowledge of competence assurance systems, training requirements for trade and craft populations, and regulatory compliance.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective apprenticeship programs in partnership with educational institutions.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills to work closely with operational leaders, third-party providers, and internal teams.
Knowledge & Experience :
- Excellent understanding of the link between training, competence, and safety with a relentless focus on driving achievement
- Very good understanding of all technical disciplines within business area, typically gained through a minimum of 10+ years relevant experience
- At least 5 years’ experience managing teams, ideally over multi-geographic locations
- Experience in managing vendors and working with supply chain to achieve best value from procurement
