Department: Primary Care China Basin
Duration: 3 months approximately
Under the supervision of the UCSF Primary Care Administrative Nurse Manager, the Hospital Assistant III plays a vital role in patient care delivery and clinic operations. This position primarily supports the assigned primary care team and provides backup to other teams. The role involves both front and back-office duties, with responsibilities including patient interaction, clinical procedures, and clerical tasks. The Hospital Assistant III ensures smooth clinic operations, assists in creating a patient-centered environment, and complies with UCSF's service standards. This position may be required to cover multiple UCSF Medical Center primary care clinics.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Functions:
- Perform routine tasks: vital signs, patient history, medication reconciliation, screening, and documentation.
- Administer vaccines under UCSF-approved protocols.
- Assist providers during exams and procedures.
- Participate in daily huddles, instrument sterilization, and patient flow management.
- Perform lab specimen collection, point-of-care testing, and phlebotomy procedures.
Patient Care Coordination:
- Organize patient appointments and ensure effective communication with providers.
- Utilize electronic health records to track patient care, communicate delays, and follow up on missed appointments.
- Maintain patient satisfaction by providing timely and supportive services.
Facility & Supply Management:
- Maintain clean, well-stocked exam rooms and labs.
- Assist with scheduling, insurance authorizations, and maintaining lab equipment.
- Adhere to infection control procedures and assist in quality improvement initiatives.
Clerical Support:
- Schedule appointments, manage phone calls, and screen emergency requests.
- Maintain patient records and manage clerical tasks during absences of other team members.
- Ensure adherence to UCSF's confidentiality and service standards.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description
UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.
Required Qualifications
- Certification from an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent experience.
- Relevant Pediatrics experience
- Current American Heart Association CPR certification.
- Willingness to obtain CPT-1 certification within 6 months of hire (may start as Hospital Assistant II until certified).
Preferred Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience as a Hospital Assistant in a medical practice.
- Experience with Epic electronic medical records.
- CPT-1 certification (California).
License/Certification
- Current American Heart Association CPR Certification
