ResponsibilitiesThe RN assigned to Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service as a Transport Nurse is expected to fulfill the RN Job Description in addition to the following specialty related areas. The transport nurse delivers care to patients during all phases of rotor wing, fixed wing and ground medical transport and is ultimately responsible for all assessments, treatments and documentation provided during the entire time the patient is under the care of Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service. The transport nurse supervises care delivered by other medical professionals and pre-hospital caregivers. Care is delivered with a high level of autonomy and skill. Transport nurses function in an expanded role during transport, performing skills and exercising clinical judgments which the state of Minnesota considers delegated medical tasks. Direction for the transport nurse's practice derives from approved protocols and policies of the transport service, and on-line medical direction from Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service physician medical directors and designees. The transport nurse also assesses and delivers care in collaboration with referring medical professionals and pre-hospital caregivers. The registered nurse is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care.
QualificationsGraduate of an accredited school of nursing with a Baccalaureate degree in nursing. Minimum three years' critical care experience as a RN in the past five years. (Mayo Clinic Ambulance flight paramedics with current FP-C credentialing may be considered: A minimum of 3 years of full-time critical care flight experience within the past 5 years with Mayo Clinic Ambulance and a minimum of 16 months of full-time RN experience in a Medical/Surgical ICU at a Mayo Clinic Hospital with Level 2 trauma designation or higher is required) ER experience and/or pre-hospital preferred. Quarterly weight assessments are conducted to comply with guidelines outlined in the Air fitness for flight policy. Applicants must be able to meet and maintain a 250-lb. weight restriction in uniform to meet this guideline. Able to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and other resuscitation measures under difficult circumstances. This is a FAA safety sensitive position that requires passing a Federal level background screen. Must be eligible for or have a current Minnesota or Wisconsin RN license. Both licenses must be obtained prior to completion of orientation. At the time of hire, current American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications are required. AHA pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) must be obtained prior to completion of orientation. A U.S. passport must be obtained prior to completion of orientation. The candidate will be required to pass a pre-work screen evaluation prior to completing orientation. The candidate is required to pass the Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN) exam within one year of completing orientation as documented by the Nursing Education Specialist. CFRN currency is a condition of continued employment in the transport role. The Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course will be scheduled by the Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service leadership team as classes are available. Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record in accordance with Mayo Clinic policy.
