Summary
The radiation therapist administers radiation to patients throughout the treatment process as a member of an interdisciplinary team that includes radiation oncologists, physicists, medical dosimetrists, nurses, and support staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists in localizing tumors, participating in treatment planning, and delivering high doses of ionizing radiation prescribed by a radiation oncologist.
- Maintains a high degree of accuracy and an awareness of safety issues.
- Remains sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of patients.
- Demonstrates understanding of cancer, radiation biology, therapy techniques, equipment technology, and safety.
- Uses professional judgment and critical thinking in treatment planning and resolving equipment problems.
- Anticipates patient needs and determines when treatment should be withheld until a physician can be consulted.
- Delivers optimal radiation therapy treatments to all patients, including CT/Sim, HDR, and basic dose calculations.
- Assists with Diagnostic CT as requested.
- Reviews patient treatment records and doses daily to ensure compliance with prescribed doses.
- Determines when to contact the physician regarding patient side effects or questions.
- Verifies patient consent for procedures.
- Addresses and documents patient questions and concerns regarding procedures.
- Provides information and instruction on proper skin care, diet, and self-care procedures.
- Takes portal films according to established protocols and reviews them for necessary changes.
- Verifies patient setup accuracy before treatment delivery.
- Checks patients' charts weekly and documents necessary data.
- Maintains documentation of quality assurance activities and reports equipment maintenance needs.
- Demonstrates completion of education related to clinical practice and maintains appropriate credentials.
- Promotes a positive, collaborative practice atmosphere with health care team members.
- Takes on-call as scheduled and performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited educational program in radiation therapy; a two-year certificate from a college or technical school is required.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Licensed by the Ohio State Board of Examiners in Radiation Therapy.
