Functional Genomics Internship Overview

The Genomics Research Center (GRC) at AbbVie is a multidisciplinary center of excellence with expertise in genomic technologies and their application, human genetics, genomic medicine, computational analysis, data integration, genome biology, and application of functional genomics.
This internship opportunity is in the Functional Genomics group within the GRC. This group plays a key role in technology development to support the identification and validation of novel drug targets across all disease indications. Under supervision of a Senior Research Scientist in the group, the intern will primarily support a project to establish a new CRISPR screen technology to support target identification in all therapeutic areas.
This internship will be based in North Chicago, IL.
Key responsibilities include:
- Performing wet-lab experimentation towards the development of novel CRISPR technologies.
- Reading and understanding assigned primary literature for the technology development.
- Creating new experimental cell lines for protein detection.
- Communicating data in a group setting and collaborating in a cross-functional setting.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Master’s or PhD in Molecular Biology, Genetics or related field.
- Ability to conduct and interpret scientific experiments, providing suggestions for additional experiments, including design and development of new assays.
- Experience with molecular biological techniques and mammalian tissue culture.
- Experience with antibody-based protein detection.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expected graduation between December 2025 – June 2026.
- Previous experience utilizing CRISPR and handling lentivirus.
- Self-motivated; ability to execute with limited supervision and direction. Can work independently and part of a team.
- Ability to troubleshoot experiments, identify, and solve elementary problems in experimental designs, including laboratory experimentation.
- Proficient in required software including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
