Edward Thomas House Medical Respite offered by Harborview Medical Center
Provides recuperative care to people experiencing homelessness who are too sick to return to the shelter or streets, but do not require a hospital level of care. Uses a harm reduction philosophy to work together with the patient to resolve medical problems; assess and treat patients for mental illness and/or substance use; and connect patients to primary care, public funding and housing. Jefferson Terrace also provides clients with food and laundry services. 34 total beds.
Admission Process: Social worker or health care provider must contact 'Respite Admissions Screener' at Harborview Medical Center, who then authorizes a respite bed. Clients must arrive at the respite bed by 5pm on the day of admission. Program staff arrange transportation to and from respite beds.
Patient Requirements: Patient must have an acute medical problem that requires daily nursing care. Patients must be referred by a medical provider, hospital, emergency department or clinic.
Fee: Accepts WA Apple Health (Medicaid) and Medicare. Assesses for charity care.

Social service staff treat the psychosocial needs of patients, including domestic violence victims, and assist patients with financial applications for public assistance.
