Position SummaryAccounting internships are temporary (10- to 12-week) positions open to:
- Current college students (or recent graduates) actively pursuing a degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business/MIS, or a related field, OR
- Existing Costco employees with experience in the following departments: RTV, Expense, Sales Audit, Payroll, Vault, or Inventory Audit.
Interns supplement Costco's 500+ Accounting staff members in a variety of areas (e.g., accounts payable, tax & benefit analysis, fixed assets, account reconciliations, real estate accounting, reporting).
Successful applicants will:
- Gain experience in a professional Accounting office at a Fortune 20 company (the world's second-largest brick and mortar retailer).
- Learn of career opportunities in the greater Accounting division for post-graduate employment.
- Network and collaborate with Costco's management team and full-time associates.
Program specifics:
- Positions are 40 hours per week at our Corporate Office in Issaquah, Washington.
- Candidates are expected to be available a minimum of 10 weeks, but no more than 90 consecutive days.
- You will participate in weekly executive leadership presentations that are exclusive to interns.
- College-direct applicants only (warehouse exempt): To provide Accounting interns with insight into Costco's primary function - the operation of a warehouse - and gain exposure to our company culture, your first week will be spent working at a Costco warehouse.
- A typical work week is Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., though hours may vary slightly depending on the department you are assigned.
Job Duties:
- Audits daily department work for accuracy. Verifies proper backup is attached.
- Ensures correct approvals are listed.
- Validates compliance with Costco Wholesale policies.
- Codes and processes payments/transactions and journal entries to general ledger accounts.
- Enters supplier invoices or journal entries into SAP and WinShuttle.
- Makes corrections to previous postings in the general ledger as needed.
- Uses Excel and/or Google Sheets daily.
- Works in a fast-paced environment, reaching daily deadlines.
- Ensures accurate and on-time payments or project completion.
Required skills, abilities, and certifications:
- Must be an enrolled college student, preferably in a business-related field (e.g., Accounting, Business, Finance, MIS), OR a recent college graduate, OR have Costco experience listed in the Position Summary section, above.
- Ability to collaborate with coworkers and management on project management and problem-solving.
- Interest in learning new skills and software. A technical aptitude preferred.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
- Ability to work with little or no supervision.
- Must be responsible and punctual.
- Must exhibit a positive attitude and be self-motivated.
