Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a senior management position responsible for the overall management of three bureaus related to the control and prevention of disease. These bureaus include Epidemiology, Public Health Laboratories, Communicable Diseases, and Environmental Health. The position serves as the State Epidemiologist for Florida. Responsible for the supervision of staff including appraisals, planning and directing their work, approving leave, having the authority for hiring, and taking disciplinary action or effectively recommending such actions.
Supervise, coordinate and evaluate the activities of the Division staff to encourage peak performance and maximize utilization of resources. Supervises direct reports including motivating, training, providing guidance, and direction. Develops expectations and meets with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, and discipline action, if needed. Maintains vacation and work schedules to ensure proper coverage and completes timesheets. Ensures all staff complete required training and are offered additional training.
Direct the overall statewide activities and programs of the Division of Disease Control & Health Protection to ensure quality services to decrease or eliminate occurrence of preventable diseases and to maintain surveillance, investigation, and education related to communicable and non-communicable diseases.
Serve as the State Epidemiologist. This responsibility includes providing leadership and strategic direction to the practice of epidemiology in the Florida Department of Health, representing Florida on national working groups, providing policy and technical advice to Executive Leadership and recommending policy and protocols to support population health. Review published research related to disease surveillance, investigation and prevention, to identify operational and policy implications for the Division of Disease Control and Health Protection. Recommend evidence-based policy and protocol enhancements, coordinate the development of, review and approve epidemiological policy, publications, plans, and other written products on behalf of the Division of Disease Control and Health Protection. This responsibility includes the identification, development and communication of public policy implications to the Division Director and other Department leadership.
Provide expert supervision, consultation, and/or technical assistance to county health departments, interdepartmental units, public and private voluntary agencies, as well as national and state agencies to ensure the integration and interpretation of disease control and prevention. Serve as liaison between Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ensure continuous interaction involving programs and federal funds. Represents the Surgeon General and other Department of Health leaders at local, state, and national meetings to ensure Florida's responsiveness toward public health, specifically disease control and prevention.
Oversee the planning, developing, implementing, and managing of a multi-million-dollar budget (federal and general revenue) which includes headquarters personnel, contracts, cooperative agreements, and grants to enhance disease control and prevention efforts in Florida.
Performs other duties as assigned including response to emergencies with the potential to impact the health of Floridians.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrated leadership competencies.
- Principles and practices of public health, disease surveillance, investigation and disease control.
- Principles and practices of epidemiology.
- Knowledge of public health policy.
Preference:
Veterinarian, clinical, or medical experience preferred.
Management experience required.
