We are seeking a Nurse Practitioner to provide essential healthcare for unaccompanied minors who are refugees and adults escaping domestic violence or human trafficking. We are Ruby’s Place, a mission-driven nonprofit committed to ending domestic violence and human trafficking. Our trauma-sensitive and client-centered services include emergency shelter, transitional housing, and wraparound support, all at no cost to our clients. This is a full-time, M-F position based in Castro Valley, CA. We offer a humane, supportive workplace with excellent benefits. Compensation is $150,000 - $175,000/year.

What You Will Do:As Nurse Practitioner, your primary clients will be unaccompanied minors (aged 12-17), who are primarily from Central and South America, and are in our care for several weeks while transitioning to longer-term foster care. You will work with a multidisciplinary clinical team to ensure a holistic approach to client care. You will work to understand how violence impacts clients’ trust, and strategize on how to build trust with the community and each client. You will also act as a health resource for other local Ruby’s Place sites that serve adults and children escaping domestic violence or human trafficking.
Key Duties:
- Provide medical diagnosis, prescribe medication, place lab and x-ray orders, communicate with stakeholders and enter data according to ORR policy. Answer questions and offer guidance for clients on health-related matters, including vaccination and preventive care advice.
- Medical Intake & Wellness Checks. Conduct initial health assessments for newly arrived clients (ages 12-17). Perform regular wellness checks and provide ongoing health assessments during client stays.
- Telehealth and Drop-In Office Hours. Provide on-site and telehealth office hours at various local Ruby’s Place locations for drop-in care for adults being sheltered from domestic violence or human trafficking.
- Care Coordination. Work closely with the clinical team, which includes therapists, psychologists, and case managers, to ensure comprehensive, trauma-informed care. Refer out to local clinics for long-term primary care as needed.
- Health and Wellness Training. Conduct health education and training for staff, clients, and community partners.
- Community Health Outreach. Occasionally represent Ruby’s Place at community events, especially those focused on health and wellness.
Who You AreYou are a compassionate healthcare provider with a commitment to client-centered and trauma-informed care. You are sensitive to serving diverse populations. You have excellent interpersonal skills and strong techniques for relationship building especially around sensitive topics like health care. You enjoy working both collaboratively and independently. You are flexible, creative, and take initiative in handling urgent situations. You believe people should determine their own path towards healing, and you have an orientation towards survivor-centered services.
Your qualifications include:
- Valid nurse practitioner license and be registered with the proper medical board or licensing agency. Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing; graduate of an NP program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE. Must meet all applicable licensing requirements regarding physician supervision, and community care licensing.
- Clinical experience in primary care, preferably with vulnerable populations. Knowledgeable about health and patient care regulations. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMRs).
- Professional Licenses and Certifications: NPF Furnishing Number, DEA Number, NPI Number, Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Malpractice insurance as necessary to the field of work.
- California mandated 40-hour Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking counselor certification (can be completed post-hire).
- Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to build trust and rapport with people of different ages and cultures. Respect for patient confidentiality and choice.
- Collaborative, adaptable, and resourceful in handling urgent situations.
