Job Summary
The Inpatient Surgery Acute Care Unit (2F) staff nurse reports to the unit nurse manager. 2F provides comprehensive, coordinated, patient-centered care to the perioperative patient 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Major Duties
- This thirty-bed unit provides telemetry monitored individualized care to the preoperative and post-operative surgical patient population. It includes pre-operative/procedural and post-operative/procedural care, psychological monitoring, administration of medications including IV therapy, pain management, discharge planning, and discharge teaching. We service about 13 different specialties including Cardiothoracic surgery, Vascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Bariatric Surgery. The average age of the patient population is 60-90 years old; the average BMI is 25 or greater. The complexity of patient care is patient-specific and directly related to high patient acuity.
- Other duties include but are not limited to:
- Collecting current symptoms and detailed patient history, then consulting and coordinating with health care team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
- Performing triage, considering both physical and psychosocial elements.
- Managing basic life support needs and stabilizing patients until the attending physician is available.
- Initiating corrective action whenever monitoring equipment shows adverse symptoms.
- Recording patients' current vital signs.
- Assisting physicians during exams, diagnostic testing, and treatments.
- Preparing and administering medications as prescribed and recording them accurately.
- Maintaining proper supplies and medical equipment for patient care.
- Initiating patient education plans as prescribed by the physician.
- Teaching patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, including post-treatment home care needs, diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication, and rehabilitation.
- Displaying professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely manner.
- Recording all care information concisely, accurately, and completely.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
- All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment.
- Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
- Must pass pre-employment physical examination.
