GENERAL SUMMARY:
Lead all aspects of the Sterile Processing Department. Establishes the vision for the department and is responsible to represent the department both internally at Bayhealth and externally. Manages employees responsible for preparing, storing, and distributing equipment as needed for patient care. Oversees proper sterilization of medical supplies and assembly of equipment. Responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling of the daily and long range activities as it relates to sterilization, decontamination, supplies and case carts system at Bayhealth on both campuses. Creates an environment to maintain an engaged and productive staff. Utilizes recommended standards to identify areas of improvement in all phases of the process. Builds and maintains strong relationships with the Perioperative department, procedural departments, vendors, and other key stakeholders across the organization.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Demonstrates complete understanding of sterile processing management and minimally invasive surgery processes.
- Plan, manage, and coordinate the 24/7 activities of designated Sterile Processing Department areas involved in sterilization, decontamination, supplies, case carts and IntelliShelf/Omnicell replenishment at Bayhealth.
- Responsible for developing department budgets (operational and capital). Allocates budgeted funds to support the operational needs and the strategic objectives of the organization. Operates facility within budget as specified in contract and initial performance statements; maintains systems for the preservation of customer resources such as surgical instrumentation.
- Develop and implement methods and systems for improving operational deficiencies. This includes sterilization, decontamination, operating room case cart system, and IntelliShelf supply replenishment. Ensure compliance with The Joint Commission regulatory requirements and department operating procedures. Develop and maintain ongoing dialogue with Bayhealth Perioperative leadership/management to assure service levels are communicated and met.
- Responsible for decisions to hire. Evaluate performance and recommend or initiate promotions, transfers, and disciplinary action for department staff. Mentors staff members in continual training, teaching and reinforcement of service, technical, analytical, planning and developmental skills. Manages the scheduling of staff, campus assignments in support of customer requirements.
- Ensures proper training of employees. Ensures that monthly in-service programs are being conducted and documented.
- Enforces the implementation of department policies, new processes and/or procedures, product conversions, new services and programs to improve efficiencies.
- Tracks productivity and provides statistical reports as necessary. Ensures clear expectations and goals are established annually for all direct and indirect reports; updated as needed.
- Ensures accuracy and completeness of all administrative documents and functions (time records, count sheets, inventories, billing, etc.)
- Creates and develops a culture of quality and service improvement, including appropriate metrics to support the department’s operating goals.
- Provides leadership and acts as a resource to supervisors and departmental staff to insure smooth operations of the day to day activities; and insuring operational goals and customer needs are met. Manage in a diverse environment.
- Oversees the cleaning, sterilization, assembly and storage of all instruments tray sets assuring availability for surgical cases. Responsible for inventory records of the Sterile Processing Departments at Bayhealth.
- Abides by all facility safety and health policies and procedures. Ensures proper operational processes are followed by all members of the team in conjunction with the Department of Health, The Joint Commission, OSHA, CD, AAMI, AORN standards.
- Resolves customer issues in a timely and efficient manner.
- All other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities.
REQUIRED MINIMUM EDUCATION AND CREDENTIAL:
- Education: Master Degree in Business
- Credential: Certified Registered Central Service Technician
EXPERIENCE:
Required: 8 (eight) years progressive management / leadership experience in Sterile Processing Department or Surgical Services with at least 5 years of those in Sterile Processing. Preferred: 10 (ten) years plus management / leadership experience as a Sterile Processing Manager in a multi-divisional hospital system. Experience working with High Reliability principles and processes.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND CREDENTIAL:
- Education: Six Sigma Lean Green Belt Certified
