Kleinschmidt has a full-time opening for a Senior Fisheries Biologist to participate in a variety of science projects related to fish ecology, behavior, and habitat. The position will be based in either our Redmond, WA or Portland, OR office. Our flexibility and core value of relationships allows us to offer employees the opportunity to work in a hybrid environment including both working from the office and remotely.
Salary Range: $95,000 - $115,000
Who You Are
A passionate Fish Biologist with an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in fisheries, ecology, or a related field and a minimum of 15 years of experience designing and leading studies of fish species/populations native to the Pacific Northwest (PNW).
Knowledgeable:
- Highly motivated candidate that has a drive to design and manage complex projects related to aquatic and ecological sciences.
- Expert knowledge of PNW diadromous fish species ecology, life history, and species differentiation.
- Skilled with fish population and aquatic habitat assessments, particularly with instream flow incremental methodology, as well as population impacts due to renewable energy generation.
- Knowledge of FERC, NEPA, and water adjudication processes and regulations.
- Competent and able to mentor others in scientific writing, data analyses, and interpretation of datasets.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Excel and Access.
Experienced:
- Experience working in and around rivers within the PNW, Northern California or Alaska.
- Competent in leading and conducting field efforts with juvenile and adult salmon species.
- Preferably, experience with other native fish and aquatic species including bull trout, lamprey, sucker, freshwater mussels, etc.
- Comfort with handling and working from boats, kayaking, and wading in swift waters, as well as working in remote areas.
- Familiarity with project and client management processes is required, including developing and maintaining scopes, schedules, and budgets for large, multidisciplinary projects.
Dedicated:
- Willingness to travel for work throughout the US and Canada.
- Ability to work independently and also integrate well as part of a team.
- Ability to work flexible hours, at times in varied weather conditions and environments required.
Additional Requirements
- Must possess permanent authorization to work in the United States and able to acquire authorization to work in Canada.
- Must be willing to travel and possess a valid driver's license.
About the Position

Specific duties for this position will include:
- Designing, leading, and implementing aquatic habitat surveys, fish behavior studies, and instream flow assessments, as well as other projects that incorporate Kleinschmidt's interdisciplinary services.
- Planning for and collecting, managing, analyzing, interpreting and assuring quality of large, complex datasets.
- Developing, reviewing, and overseeing impact assessment; analysis, interpretation of data and results, discussion, and conclusion sections of large technically or politically complex reports or report sections in discipline (e.g., fisheries, wetlands, water quality).
- Adhering to Kleinschmidt's Quality Management System.
- Engaging in new client development and attracting work by marketing, proposal writing, strategizing, and maintaining personal contacts and relationships.
- Mentoring junior employees and peers as needed and sharing expertise with the firm through presentations and seminars.
