Materials Laboratory Engineer
A Snapshot of Your Day
As the Materials Laboratory Engineer, you will have a solid understanding of chemical, physical, and electrical properties of materials to support the laboratory analysis of dielectric and metal materials used in Large Turbine Generators. You will work in the Siemens Energy Hub located in Charlotte, NC under the direction of the Generator Innovation Laboratory Manager and in collaboration with experienced materials engineers while providing technical direction to laboratory technicians. You will also provide direct and “hands-on” support of laboratory operations, operating lab equipment and providing direct support of laboratory experiments and investigations.
This is a lead technical position within the operations of a Materials Analysis lab where you will be working collaboratively with Materials Engineers while providing technical guidance, “hands-on” operation of laboratory equipment, and occasional mentoring to the Laboratory Technicians. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the production of large power generation products. You will work on a variety of laboratory applications in support of the design, development, analysis, and manufacturing processes for the generator product line. It is expected that the person accepting this position would grow in expertise required for laboratory operations and continue to provide leadership to the team of Laboratory technicians.
How You’ll Make an Impact
- Develop and implement operating instructions for laboratory equipment.
- Perform calculations; write specifications for purchasing laboratory equipment, while developing and upgrading laboratory processes and procedures.
- Create and implement preventative maintenance plans for laboratory equipment.
- Develop and maintain a system to maintain equipment calibration status.
- Provide laboratory support for performing failure analysis and root cause analysis for materials, components, and manufacturing processes.
- Provide lead laboratory support for performing technical qualification of domestic and international suppliers of materials.
- Work collaboratively with materials engineers to develop methods of testing and analysis for generator materials.
- Develop and implement continuous improvement concepts for lab workflow.
- Provide clear communication of test results to Materials Engineers.
- Support department collaboration with external customers as well as internal customers.
- Prepare or participate in the preparation of Engineering reports, statistical analysis of test data, etc. to support laboratory work.
- Provide direct collaboration with external suppliers as required to operate and maintain specialized laboratory equipment.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Applied Physics.
- A minimum of 2 years of industrial working experience is strongly preferred. Candidates with more experience can be considered for a higher level or vice-versa.
- A strong preference for “hands-on” work experience that demonstrates expertise in both the theory and principles of operation for, and the ability to operate and understand laboratory equipment used in the following areas of materials development and analysis:
- Load Frames used for mechanical testing of materials.
- Thermal Analysis equipment for use in TGA, DMA, and DSC testing.
- Thermal Conductivity Measurements.
- Chemical Analysis of polymer resins including saponification number, viscosity, and gel-times.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, as required (20%).
- Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization.
Preferred
(Additional areas of interest that would be beneficial but not required include):
- Short Term Voltage Breakdown Testing.
- Voltage Endurance Testing.
- Power Factor and Partial Discharge Testing.
- Infrared Thermography.
- Application of tape-based mica-based insulation systems.
- Vacuum Pressure Impregnation Systems.
