Job Summary:
Functions under medical and nursing supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. Possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate physician's performance of invasive and surgical procedures. Perform duties related to sterile processing, supply and equipment management, preference card management, and management of environmental controls. Participates in more advanced operative procedures, orientation and training for specific shifts or procedures, care and maintenance of specialized equipment and higher responsible levels of activity for specific surgical services within the department. Serve as preceptors for surgical technologists as well as students in the perioperative environment.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Role model for staff and students, serves as preceptor for new staff and students, resource for the service, staff, and new employees, teachers and maintains knowledge, skill, and understanding of advanced complex procedures, demonstrates knowledge of instrument sets, equipment, and supplies, establishes and maintains sterile field, performs sponge, sharps and instrument counts according to policy, assists with the administration of prescribed medication; acting as vehicle to provide the surgeon with the medication at the operative field including proper labeling, communicates effectively with the administration of drugs within the sterile field, assures physical preparation of clinical area including damp dusting and placing furniture for first day cases.
Assists with inventory, stocking, and reordering of supplies, assists with revising preference cards, count sheets, and instrument sets, and reacts promptly and appropriately in emergency situations.
Verifies exposure to sterilization processing and integrity of sterile packaging opening supplies aseptically, demonstrates knowledge of the use of sterilizers, sterile indicators and wrapping, knowledge of instrument reprocessing, levels of disinfection and sterilization for surgical instruments, power instruments and scopes, demonstrates operator knowledge, safety precautions, and troubleshooting for equipment, supplies and patient care items.
Contributes in educational opportunities for OR staff, provides in-service to staff for specialty equipment, instruments or supplies for service line, participates in the Perioperative Services quality safety clinical practice program as demonstrated by actively working to achieve metrics set by the department, exhibits responsiveness to personnel at all levels, communicates in a timely manner, arrives on time to meetings, and maintains accessibility and visibility in area/hospital.
Required Minimum Education:
Vocational or technical training or degree: Surgical Technologist
Preferred: Associates Degree: Surgical Technologist
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
- CST Certification (Certified Surgical Technologist)
- BLS - Instructor or Basic Life Support
Required Minimum Experience:
Required: 3 year(s) or more of experience in Surgical Technology, CST certification
Preferred: 5 year(s) or more of experience in a like or similar environment as a CST.
