The Medical Lab Technician (MLT) prepares specimens for analysis by accessioning orders via LIS (CIS), verifying specimen acceptability and performing established pre-analytical procedures in accordance with laboratory policy in an accurate, safe and timely manner. This role provides support services for the clinical laboratories by resolving problem specimens/orders and responding to telephone inquiries for test results and specimen collection criteria.
The Medical Lab Technician job duties are performed in a customer focused, courteous and efficient manner. This job must be available for other duties as assigned by team leaders, supervisors, and departmental Managers. Additionally, this job provides accurate and timely testing and reports results to requesting physicians and other health care professionals for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
- Certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) preferred.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
- Certified as a MLT (ASCP) within 18 months from the date hired into position.

Education/training REQUIRED:
- Associate Degree in Clinical/Medical Lab Sciences unless grandfathered under previous requirements.
Independent actions required:
- Performance of procedures, evaluation and reporting of results as outlined in the manual of standard operating procedures.
- Notification of panic values to ordering physicians.
- Customer service oriented communications.
Additional position requirements:
- Rotating weekends as required.
- Holiday scheduling as required.
- On call availability, approximating 4-5 weeks per year, for emergency coverage on any shift.
