Reporting to the Manager, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), the Infection Control Practitioner (ICP) is responsible for the delivery and maintenance of the highest standards of IPC practices to ensure patient safety across Covenant Health and prevent healthcare associated infections. The ICP serves as a role model to promote the goals of the IPC program within the larger context of Covenant Health's mission, vision, and values. It is expected that the ICP will complete additional formal training in IPC within the first year of practice. It is also expected that the ICP obtain and maintain requirements for Certification in Infection Control (CIC) from the Certification Board of Infection Control (CBIC) following 2 years of practice. Please note: must be able to travel between various sites/locations; and may require the use of a personal vehicle.

The primary accountabilities of this position include ensuring current infection control best practices are being met; ensuring select sentinel and significant health care infections, events and trends are promptly identified and addressed; providing and analyzing data to maintain current standards contributing to quality improvement; consulting and liaising with community health agencies; as well as consulting and collaborating with stakeholders. Other key functions include committee participation with internal and external stakeholders, facilitating change through interpretation and application of standards, and providing and developing new clinical practice recommendations for Infection Control. The ICP is responsible for complying with all professional licensing regulatory bodies and Covenant Health policies and procedures. The ICP provides leadership and direction for IPC initiatives throughout the organization, as well as orientations, in-service programs, and clinical consultation to individual staff development initiatives in Infection Prevention and Control. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the HSAA Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications:Baccalaureate degree in Nursing or other health related science. Currently licensed with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA), College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA), or an applicable professional regulatory body. Completion of basic Infection Prevention and Control training course, or commitment to complete this in first year of practice.
Additional Required Qualifications:Skills and expertise to communicate knowledge and support delivery of the Infection Prevention and Control work plan. Interpersonal skills including negotiation, influencing, facilitating, conflict resolution, and the ability to form positive working relationships. Self-motivated, positive, and confident with the ability to cope under stress.
Preferred Qualifications:Previous Infection Prevention and Control experience preferred. Experience in both Acute Care and Continuing Care sectors an asset.
