We're searching for a Wellness & Athletics Director!
The ideal director will be an inspirational, yet operationally focused leader who is deeply committed to Urban Ventures’ mission and long-term vision, demonstrating a passion for using athletics and various wellness activities to promote holistic health and build relationships.
Working primarily Monday – Saturday, late afternoon and evenings.
Primary Responsibilities
The director is expected to design, implement and manage a robust range of programs and activities for youth and adults that promote holistic health and fitness. Wellness and Athletics programming should have broad reach, with a goal of bringing in large numbers of participants, while partnering with other program directors to engage them in programs designed to create deeper relationships.
Specific Responsibilities
- Identify, schedule, and manage a wide variety of wellness (e.g., dance, yoga, exercising) and athletic (e.g., individual and team sports) programming, to maximize use of Urban Ventures’ campus resources (gymnasium, athletic fields, classroom spaces).
- Regularly survey UV program participants and the organization’s target community to determine interests for enhanced programming.
- Promote a sense of community with activities that bring diverse groups together (whether kids, youth, adults, or whole families).
- While competitive teams may be a part of the programming, it must not be the predominate focus. Broad-based, diverse programming for all skill and activity levels is preferred.
- Recruit, hire, and manage employees and/or contracted resources (i.e., coaches, instructors, trainers) and hold them accountable to UV’s core values, statement of faith, and mission.
- Collaborate with other UV program directors to encourage cross-program integration.
- Coordinate gym, field, and classroom scheduling with Cristo Rey Athletics Director and the building’s General Manager.
- Develop and adhere to a department budget.
- Ensure program attendance is tracked and updated in SalesForce.
- Ensure that >50% of participants come from UV’s designated service area.
- Promote a respectful, safe, friendly environment for all participants; ensure adequate supervision and quick de-escalation when applicable.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must have at least two years of postsecondary education; bachelor’s degree preferred; additional related experience may be used to replace the educational requirement.
- Track record of high-accountability and goal-orientation – the ability to make good decisions through a combination of data-driven analysis, personal experience, and wise judgment; high level of business acumen including successful revenue and expense management; the experience to balance the delivery of high-quality program services against the reality of limited budgets.
- At least 3 years of general management experience is required; leadership experience for an athletics program is preferred.
- Previous budgetary responsibility.
- Experience developing and being accountable to program goals, along with measurement, evaluation, and reporting on results.
- Commitment to diversity and organizational capacity-building —ability to effectively increase the capacity of employees by ensuring team members feel valued and challenged in their roles; ability to work effectively across diverse groups of people and build internal and external partnerships, especially within communities of color.
- Action-oriented — embraces change and challenges; an enthusiastic problem-solver; not afraid to take calculated risks and assume responsibility; can overcome resistance and take unpopular stands when necessary.
- Cross-sector collaboration — experience formalizing partnerships that bring together faith-based and non-faith-based organizations to achieve greater impact.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; bilingual Spanish/English also preferred.
- Faith and values alignment – passion for integrating biblical principles in work and family life; able to align with and judiciously articulate the mission and values of Urban Ventures.
