The Surgical Technologist Coordinator is responsible for assisting with the delivery of quality surgical care through
planning and anticipating the surgeon/procedure needs and coordinating with the circulating perioperative nurse during
surgical procedures. The Surgical Technologist Coordinator manages the development and maintenance of the computer based surgical services preference card system. Demonstrating competency in surgical technology to include all major surgical specialty areas; includes gathering and preparing sterile supplies, equipment, preparing/maintaining the sterile field and assisting the surgeon by supplying sterile instruments/supplies to the sterile field in a safe and efficient manner.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Administrative:
• Coordinate and oversees the daily activities between the Operating Room and Sterile Processing to ensure efficient
case flow
• Serve as the point person with OR and/or SPD staff and physicians to resolve issues that may arise before, during
or after a case
• Responsible for assisting with projects and in process improvement activities to include promotion of customer
service/satisfaction through training, education and resolution of staff and physician issues
• Communicate with OR and SPD staff prior to surgical cases to ascertain specific instrument and supply needs and
ensure these items are available
• Identify instrumentation related to tray additions and reconfigurations and communicates order to appropriate
person
• Review surgery schedule to determine loaner/vendor instrumentation availability and communicates needs to OR
and SPD
• Ensure instrumentation is ready and available for all first cases of the day, as well as instrumentation to be
reprocessed for to follow cases
• Assist with the education of OR and SPD staff. Provides in-services to SPD and contracted staff related to new
equipment
• Assist materials manager in maintaining inventories. Monitors and order supplies to maintain par levels
Surgical Technologist
• Work closely with inventory personnel and financing to accurately maintain inventory and equipment lists for surgical
procedures
• Ensure proper management and maintenance of preference cards inclusive of creation, edit, and review within the
EMR system
• Identify and follow manufactures instructions to sort, disassemble, decontaminate, rinse and disinfect flexible
scopes, instrumentation, and equipment
• Facilitate room turnovers
• Assemble and prepare instrumentation for sterilization
• Utilize count sheets to correctly assemble, protect, wrap containerize and/or peel pack and label instrumentations
• Identify and inspects instruments for cleanliness and functionality
• Follow manufactures recommendations for sterilization methods
• Properly document and verify sterilization loads and biological test to determine the efficacy of the sterilization
process
• Prepare carts from pick list and delivers instrumentation to as needed to the operating room
• Count inventory and stock operating par levels for stored instrumentation and emergency carts
• Performs routine scrub role as well specifically delegated department duties.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of medical terminology
• Solid communication skills
• Demonstrates proficiency in medical and surgical technology
• Strong knowledge of sterile technique related to operating room preparation and procedures
• Excellent organizational skills
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel)
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• High School Diploma or GED
• Certified Surgical Technologist
• Current Surgical Technologist Certification from an accredited program or completed an appropriate training
program for surgical technology in the army, navy, air force, marine corps, or coast guard of the United States or in
the United States Public Health Service
• Basic Life Support certification
• Three (3) years of experience as Surgical Technologist
