Overview
This is a hybrid role, with the expectation that time working will regularly take place inside and outside of a company office.
This role is located in either Raleigh, NC, Phoenix, AZ, or Columbia, SC.
This position supports the Retail Underwriting team at First Citizens Bank. The role is responsible for underwriting and evaluating consumer loan applications from Bank branches. Primary responsibility in this position is to evaluate non-real estate and real estate secured applications to determine risk and creditworthiness. This role works closely with sales associates on loan decisions and structure, ensuring retail credit lending activities comply with federal and state regulations.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite - Underwrites and evaluates retail credit applications according to applicable regulations, procedures, and guidelines. Reviews financial statements, tax returns, and results of analysis to determine risk and creditworthiness.
- Analysis - Interprets financial data and conducts detailed cash flow analysis to aid in underwriting efforts and conveys information about clients with high loan exposure. Analyzes specific customer situations to determine mutually beneficial credit solutions.
- Business Support - Determines customer needs through communication with branch personnel. Resolves inquiries on retail underwriting and retail denial compliance. Assists in determining mutually beneficial credit solutions for clients and the Bank.
- Loan Proficiency - Acts as a resource through advanced knowledge of underwriting processes, requirements, and daily activities. Possesses detailed knowledge of appraisal requirements. May serve as a backup on loan reconsiderations and may assist management with related initiatives.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and 4 years of experience in retail credit.

High School Diploma or GED and 8 years of experience in retail credit.
Required Qualifications:
- Consumer Credit Underwriting experience, including underwriting Real Estate Secured loan types.
- Strong understanding of financial principles and concepts.
- Comprehensive knowledge of financial documentation including tax returns and prepared financial statements.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical skills with high attention to detail.
- Solid decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Time management skills and ability to handle multiple loan assignments.
Additional Qualifications:
- Experience underwriting in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Teams, and Word.
