Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of this organizational unit focuses on safeguarding the assets of the University including cash, certificates, or other documents and ensuring the accurate posting of all revenues received by the institution or the University and authorized accounts. This unit provides central receipting and coordinates all receipting for the University including institutional trust, academics, grants, and proprietary funds. This unit summarizes all cash activity for each day and generates reports to verify deposits for specific funds. This unit also processes credit card payments using an electronic terminal and assists in clearing students for enrollment. This unit oversees Banner training and assists in processing or writing off items for different departments within the University. Correspondence is developed within this unit to be sent to each department for establishing petty cash funds and issuing receipt books.
Description of Work
The primary purpose of the Bursar’s Office is to perform general accounting reviews, reconciliations, and analyses related to university receivables. Due to the small size of the staff, the Accounting Techs serve as primary and/or backup in the different areas of Student Accounts. The purpose of this position is to work with accounts receivable, cashiering, and collections, with a primary focus on collections of student and other university outstanding debts.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
Knowledge-Technical: Thorough knowledge of government accounting methods, procedures, and practices. May require basic knowledge of a specialized accounting field or program. Knowledge of a broad range of technology, financial systems, and software packages. Ability to develop formulas for complex spreadsheets and set up automated procedures to resolve operational issues of software/hardware.
Financial Program Monitoring and Management: Ability to manage a variety of transactions requiring considerable financial program knowledge. Ability to monitor and manage financial accounts for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with accounting standards and regulations. Ability to manage reporting of complex financial areas or programs, including preparation and analysis of financial statements and reports. Ability to supervise various financial functions of considerable complexity.
Problem Solving: Ability to resolve programmatic and financial problems of considerable complexity requiring research, analysis, and implementation of change. Ability to develop and implement procedure changes.
Communication: Ability to justify and defend financial information.
Minimum Training and Experience
High School diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
