This recruitment will be used to fill future full-time, part-time, short-term, and temporary Seed Analyst 1 positions in the Department of Crop & Soil Science – Seed Lab at Oregon State University (OSU).

The OSU Seed Lab provides quality control information to the seed industry for purposes of marketing and shipping domestically and/or internationally, according to the seed labeling requirements of the Federal Seed Act (FSA). The Seed Lab's customers include seed growers, cleaners, dealers, and other various programs.
The Oregon Seed Certification Service (OSCS) seed samples are tested by the OSU Seed Lab. The Laboratory also serves the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) and other government agencies by conducting regulatory testing and providing technical support.
The OSU Seed Lab is a member of the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) and is accredited by the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA). The Lab and Seed Analysts participate in Referee testing for AOSA, CFIA, and USDA.
The purpose of the incumbent is to represent the OSU Seed Lab Purity Testing program. They will support and independently conduct seed testing analysis, including visual purity exams and other seed determination.
The incumbent uses comprehensive knowledge of Laboratory policy and standards set by State and Federal law, USDA standards, and ISTA rules. They keep current with standards and procedures as changes are made.
The incumbent is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of purity seed analysis data according to testing procedures and policies. They will record results electronically based on visual inspections.
The incumbent functions as part of a team to advance the training of junior analysts and contributes to lectures on purity testing and seed identification.
The incumbent will use, adjust, maintain, and complete minor repairs of testing equipment. They will self-manage, make decisions, and collaborate with others in the OSU Seed Lab Purity Testing program.
All Seed Lab staff are responsible for ensuring the highest level of quality in all work to create a positive public reputation for the OSU Seed Lab.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):
One year of full-time experience performing purity, germination, or special tests on seeds such as Bluegrass and Bentgrass seeds; OR a certificate of competency in seed testing from AOSA or SCST.

Type:
The incumbent will spend the majority of their time sitting at a purity board, looking at seeds through a lighted magnifying lens. Some work will involve operating equipment to separate seeds and may require lifting up to 20 lbs. The work schedule is Monday through Friday with fluctuating hours depending on sample load.
