Recommend, develop and implement internal and external communications and media strategies that support the Mayor’s office. Plan and execute events for the Mayor.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Research, analyze and make recommendations to provide strategic advice and communications support to the Mayor and her office.
- Deliver effective, proactive and creative communication and media strategies, including all social media.
- Plan and execute events for the Mayor.
- Manage and execute communications projects, delivering communications tactics as per plan.
- Monitor trends and issues affecting the Mayor, research current and emerging communication technologies and practices, and identify customer service improvement opportunities.
- Develop Mayor’s media component for communication/issue management plans by identifying media opportunities, preparing media materials, tracking and analyzing media coverage, and reporting results.
- Provide functional guidance to staff, contract staff, freelance suppliers, volunteers and consultants as required.
- Development of communications materials to support the Mayor's Office.
- Provides on-site support to the Mayor at public events.
- Supports the Office of the Mayor in all activities and projects in order to successfully implement the strategic objectives of the Mayor of Mississauga.
- Prepare various types of communication and correspondence on behalf of the Mayor including developing communication materials, such as greetings, certificates, cultural outreach statements, speaking remarks, newsletters, and information emails.
- Working with the Mayor, Chief of Staff and Senior Stakeholder Relations Officer to develop and implement community relations and outreach strategies to promote the City of Mississauga and Office of the Mayor.
- Assist the Mayor's Senior Stakeholder Relations Officer with monitoring issues within Mississauga and the broader Peel community, keep apprised of local community, stakeholder groups and current events to increase awareness and identify opportunities.
- Conduct necessary research and draft policy briefings.
- Maintain continuous awareness of corporate administrative systems, policies and procedures, organizational structures and major corporate and departmental activities.
- Monitor and maintain current knowledge of Council and Committee activities.
Skills and Qualifications
- Post-graduate education in the field of communications, public relations, public administration, journalism, political science, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years related experience within government and communications (public relations, marketing and media relations). Previous municipal government experience an asset.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the operation of municipal, provincial and federal governments.
- Strong understanding of the operations of the City of Mississauga and Region of Peel.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure while managing multiple competing priorities.
- Assist in organizing and supporting the Mayor and the Mayor’s staff, in managing her schedule, including on-site logistical support and stakeholder management at public events.
- Strong communications skills, stakeholder management, and event planning, including social media and photography.
- Strong customer service focus.
- Demonstrated ability to think critically and exercise judgement.
- Practices a high degree of professionalism, confidentiality, discretion, tact and diplomacy.
- Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment with strong interpersonal skills.
- An understanding of the Mississauga community and its stakeholders is considered an asset.
- Detail-oriented with an ability to handle multiple projects/priorities.
- Previous communication, public engagement and event planning experience an asset.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, along with appropriate communications programs.
- Thoroughness and accuracy are essential when managing the production of major public documents. Primarily office environment.
Hourly Rate/Salary: $47.72 to $63.63 (Based on Salary Grade F $86,858 to $115,812)
