Head Start Disability Services Consultant
Salary: $9520 to $11793 Monthly

The Head Start & Early Learning Program at LACOE is one of the largest in the nation and contracts with various early childhood education (ECE) agencies that employ a staff of more than 3,000 people to provide direct services to children from birth to five years old and their families within diverse communities throughout Los Angeles County.
The Head Start Disability Services Consultant is responsible for improving access, participation, and support for children with moderate to severe disabilities. The position helps build the capacity of early childhood staff and education providers across LA County by giving them the knowledge, skills, and resources to offer more inclusive and welcoming environments. This includes job embedded coaching for classroom staff and administrators, training, and resource brokering, amongst other duties.
The Well Qualified Candidate Will Possess the Following
Knowledge:
- Early intervention and special education curricula, trends, and laws (e.g., Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and related federal legislation.
- Speech and Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, or Mental Health services for children 0 – 5.
- Ethics in relation to child and family services.
- Adult learning styles.
- Process and procedures of implementing direct services.
- Functions and evidence-based methods of screenings and assessments.
- Community resources that support disabilities services.
- Impact of culture in service delivery.
- Techniques for navigating specialized services.
- Data collection and analysis and applicable computer software as related to report writing, record keeping and analysis.

Required Education and Experience
Education: A master’s degree in speech pathology, occupational therapy, social work, marriage and family therapy, educational psychology, or a field closely related to the job requirements of this classification, from an institution of higher learning accredited by a regional accrediting organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Foreign degrees and credit units require translation and equivalency established by an agency recognized by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Experience: Four years of experience administering or coordinating child and family disability or early childhood intervention services in a multi-disciplinary setting, including two years of experience working as a licensed Occupational Therapist, licensed Speech and Language Pathologist, or licensed Mental Health Professional.
Additional Requirements: Licensure or certification by the appropriate state agency as a speech and language pathologist, occupational therapist, or mental health professional. A valid California driver’s license and the availability of private transportation or the ability to obtain transportation between job sites is required.
Selection Process: Candidates who meet the minimum requirements above will be invited to participate in an examination that may consist of a performance and structured interview.
