Acute Medicine is an exciting and essential pillar of urgent care at UHBW. We have ambitious plans to grow the service at the BRI, including the expansion and development of our Acute Medical Unit and Same Day Emergency Care Unit.
Recruitment and retention premium up to £20,000 including an initial welcome bonus.
Relocation allowance and support up to £8,000.

Our service comprises a 39-bedded Acute Medical Unit, Same Day Emergency Care unit, and the management of the Medical Take. Acute Medicine is within the Division of Medicine, working closely with colleagues in the Emergency Department, Care of the Elderly, Respiratory Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, and Hepatology.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership and direction for the multi-professional team in the management of the acute medical patients on our Acute Medical Unit, Same Day Emergency Care Unit, and Medical Take. Responsibilities include leading ward rounds, directing patient management, performing practical procedures, teaching junior medical and other staff, attending multidisciplinary meetings, participating in the governance activity of the department, and liaising with other professionals both within and outside the Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Acute Medicine comprises the following:
- 36 inpatient bedded Acute Medical Unit on Ward A400 with clinical leadership provided by two consultants from 09:00-17:00.
- Medical Same Day Emergency Unit operates 7 days a week from 08:00 to 22:00, with the Acute Medicine Consultant present from 11:00 to 19:00 on weekdays.
- Acute Medicine provides leadership of the Acute Medical Take with consultants managing referrals and on-call junior teams.

Qualifications & Training
- Full and specialist registration in either AIM or GIM with the General Medical Council (GMC).
- Eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview.
- Higher academic qualification e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent.
Experience
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in acute medicine.
- Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
- Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department.
Clinical Knowledge and skills
- Up-to-date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty.
- Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty.
- Broad range of IT skills.
Clinical Governance and Audit
- Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.
- Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation.
- Positive approach to evidence-based practice.
- Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme.
Research
- Knowledge of the principles involved in research.
