Acute Medicine is an exciting and essential pillar of urgent care at UHBW. We have ambitious plans to grow the service at the BRI. Key milestones aim to include the expansion and development of our Acute Medical Unit, Same Day Emergency Care Unit and optimising clinical pathways.
Recruitment and retention premium up to £20,000 including an initial welcome bonus.
Relocation allowance and support up to £8,000.
Negotiable job plans up to a maximum of 12PAs.
Ability to pursue specialist interests e.g. research, teaching, leadership, split job plans and cross-specialty working.

Our service is comprised of a 39 bedded Acute Medical Unit, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit and the management of the Medical Take. Acute Medicine is within the Division of Medicine, working closely with colleagues in the Emergency Department, Care of the Elderly, Respiratory Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
Our Trust includes leading tertiary specialist services including the Bristol Heart Institute, St Michaels Maternity Hospital, Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre. We actively encourage our consultants to explore opportunities for cross-specialty collaboration.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership and direction for the multi-professional team in the management of the acute medical patients on our Acute Medical Unit, Same Day Emergency Care Unit and Medical Take. It is expected that they will lead ward rounds, direct the management of patients, perform practical procedures, teach both junior medical and other staff, attend multidisciplinary meetings, take part in the governance activity of the department, participate in the management and administration of the service and liaise with other professionals both within and outside the Trust as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Acute Medicine is comprised of the following:
- 36 inpatient bedded Acute Medical Unit on Ward A400. Clinical leadership is provided by two consultants based on the ward from 09:00-17:00 to complete ward rounds, oversee new admissions and manage referrals.
- Medical Same Day Emergency Unit runs 7 days a week 08:00 to 22:00 alongside the Emergency Department. The Acute Medicine Consultant is present from 11:00 to 19:00 on weekdays to facilitate rapid and early senior review of the patients.
- Acute Medicine provides leadership of the Acute Medical Take with Acute Medicine consultant managing referrals and our on-call junior team from 08:00 -20:00 on weekdays.
Person specification
Qualifications & Training
- Full and specialist registration in either AIM or GIM with the General Medical Council (GMC) or
- Eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview
- Higher academic qualification e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent
Experience
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in acute medicine
- Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
- Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust’s service strategy
Clinical Knowledge and skills
- Up to date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
- Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty
- Broad range of IT skills
Clinical Governance and Audit
- Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
- Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
- Positive approach to evidence based practice
- Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of participation
Research
- Knowledge of the principles involved in research
