Job Summary of the Lead CT Technologist
The Charge CT Technologist shall be responsible for the daily operation of the CT Department. Monitors and directs all technical functions, which includes efficient utilization of equipment and human resources based upon patient load. Optimizes the use of radiation by utilizing the concepts of Image Gently, Image Wisely, and the American College of Radiology. Ensures the staff is trained and competent. Maintains Performance Improvement and Quality Control activities. Responsible for performing CT procedures in accordance with standards and practice set forth by American Registry of Radiologic Technologist and Hospital Policies and Procedures. The Charge CT Technologist demonstrates knowledge of the human structure and functions, patient care/safety, positioning, principles of radiographic sciences, radiation protection, medication safety (contrast), and specialized techniques. Maintains professional judgment and conduct that is complimentary of the ARRT Code of Ethics and St. David’s Healthcare Values.
Responsibilities of the Lead CT Technologist
- Oversee workflow of department, utilizing Meditech tracker and Technologist communication board.
- Ensure all procedures and related tasks are completed during shift without compromising quality.
- Conduct orientation of new employees/cross-training according to Orientation Checklist and Job Description.
- Teach and train staff and recognize when others are in need of assistance.
- Monitor the scans and job performance of each CT Technologist.
- Monitor staff compliance to safety practices; infection control, contrast administration, fall precaution billing, and other SAMC policies and guidelines.
- Schedule outpatient and inpatient procedures in accordance with available resources.
- Ensure all procedures and related tasks are completed in a timely manner according to the STAT procedure policy.
- Coach staff as warranted.
- Ensure the CT rooms and equipment are cleaned and stocked after each patient or as needed.
- Order CT supplies, meet operational budget expenses, ensure availability at all times.
- Ensure supplies including invasive supplies are rotated and checked for expiration monthly.
- Assist Supervisor with the CT staffing and call schedules. Arrange coverage during unexpected employee absences.
- Responsible for procedure turnaround by ensuring exams are REVIEWED in PACS and moved to taken post procedures. Address conflict issues.
- Plan for future procedures and conflict by viewing the schedule and next day orders.
- Complete the monthly Quality Control and Performance Improvement functions, report for the CT Department monthly.
- Oversee the completion of Risk Management Reports when warranted.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of the operating parameters of the scanners.
- Operate the CT scanners and related equipment efficiently and effectively.
- Follow established scanning protocols.
- Demonstrate proficiency in scanning trauma, acute & challenging patients or situations; possess skill to modify positioning and scanning factors when standard cannot be performed.
- Possess knowledge of disease processes and communicate findings to the Radiologist.
- Recognize and adapt scanning to pathology.
- Ensure images are labeled correctly and identified according to protocol.
- Scan patients of all ages, tailoring the exam to the age group to provide optimal images.
- Proficient at performing CTA scans and retrospective reconstruction.
- Knowledgeable of cardiac anatomy and contraindications; ability to perform Coronary Scans and Calcium Scoring.
- Complete quality scans in a timely manner, effectively organize and prioritize workflow to meet STAT and urgent demands.
- Demonstrate competency in the safe usage of the power injector and adhere to set guidelines.
Qualifications of the Lead CT Technologist
EDUCATION: Graduate of an American Medical Association approved program in Radiologic Technology and advanced certification (ARRT – CT).
EXPERIENCE: Two years of experience performing Computed Tomography procedures is preferred.
LICENSED/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:
- Certified by the Texas Medical Board (TMB) as a Medical Radiologic Technologist.
- Certified in Radiology and CT by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT, RTR, CT).
- Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
