Amgen is searching for an Engineer to be based at our Thousand Oaks campus in Southern California, working in Amgen’s Drug Product Technologies department. The group’s mandate is to identify, design, develop, and implement novel technologies into Amgen’s worldwide multimodality clinical and commercial manufacturing network, Process Development and Quality laboratories, and associated business processes across Amgen manufacturing globally. This role is crucial for the success of Amgen in its goal to ensure supply to our patients while driving a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and transformation.
We are pursuing highly motivated candidates with a passion for computer vision, industrial automation and applied artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will be challenged to apply their expertise in machine learning to enhance the way data are used to make critical decisions at Amgen. The Engineer will also participate in a variety of other efforts to identify automation opportunities across the business and apply cutting-edge techniques to deliver value-adding and differentiating solutions for Amgen Process Development.
Finally, the successful candidate will thrive in a cross-functional team environment, adeptly collaborating and liaising with functions across Amgen globally as well as select strategic partner companies.
Specific responsibilities of the Engineer may include but are not limited to:
- Assisting in the hands-on design and development of physical proof-of-concept systems;
- Understanding and mastery of relevant physical manufacturing systems;
- Advancing deep learning, machine learning, and artificial intelligence applications across Amgen;
- Creation of striking visualizations to facilitate data interpretation and decision-making;
- Staying abreast of industry trends, especially in the realms of artificial intelligence and process automation, and exploring novel tools and techniques to improve data utilization;
- Designing studies, supporting study execution, analyzing data, and presenting results in support of new manufacturing and analytical technology development, with an emphasis on critically assessing the benefits and drawbacks of candidate technologies;
- Documenting work in accordance with good documentation practices;
- Delivering technical presentations and training to a variety of stakeholders, including executive leadership as well as manufacturing operators and laboratory analysts;
- As needed, traveling domestically and internationally up to 10% of the time.

Basic Qualifications:
- High school diploma / GED and 8 years of Engineering experience OR
- Associate’s degree and 6 years of Engineering experience OR
- Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of Engineering experience OR
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proven experience in designing and building computer vision hardware systems;
- Experience with robotics, PLCs, IIoT and other industrial automation;
- Experience with image processing algorithms and libraries;
- Experience building models and developing algorithms for deep learning, machine learning, and/or artificial intelligence;
- Familiarity with electronics, basic circuit design and troubleshooting;
- Familiarity with mechanical engineering fundamentals and CAD (e.g. SolidWorks);
- Programming proficiency in Python and an ability to learn new development tools and libraries;
- Intellectual curiosity with a drive to learn new concepts, algorithms, and technologies rapidly as needs arise;
- The ability to communicate findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences;
- The ability to learn and act upon dynamic information at a rapid pace in a cross-functional team environment;
- An aptitude for technical problem solving, critical thinking, and the delivery of value-adding solutions in a team-oriented environment.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
