Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Inpatient Hematology Oncology
This APP position will primarily have responsibility for the Inpatient Oncology and Hematology patient population with an alternative schedule. This will be mostly nights/weekends with some opportunity to rotate through the daytime. The provider will have alternating responsibility for patient care on inpatient services (Leukemia, Solid Tumor, Hematology). Additional opportunities for rotating between inpatient and outpatient Hematology or Oncology patient care may be available for individuals with Primary Care PNP/FNP or PA-C certification. Each inpatient oncology service cares for newly diagnosed patients as well as patients requiring readmission for scheduled chemotherapy, immunotherapy or to treat intercurrent treatment complications. Patients on the hematology service will be patients with hemoglobinopathies, bleeding disorders and other hematological diseases who require inpatient care.
Inpatient duties include, but are not limited to:
- obtaining health history and performing physical examination
- rounding with the inpatient team, consisting of attending, residents, fellows, nurses and other healthcare personnel
- documentation in the Electronic Medical Record System (EMR)
- ordering and managing chemotherapy and medications
- ordering and managing schedule (II-IV) medications
- assisting with admission, chemotherapy and protocol orders
- ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests and therapeutic modalities
- performing procedures, such as bone marrow aspiration and biopsies, lumbar puncture (diagnostic or with chemotherapy instillation)
- supporting fertility preservation
- supporting research protocols
- supporting and coordinating care with a multi-disciplinary team, e.g., nursing, residents, fellows, attendings, pharmacy, social work, specialty consultants
- providing patient and family education
- participating in nursing education
- coordination of patient discharges, including home care orders
- dictations as required
The position will include rotating weekend and holiday coverage. Participation in focused quality or research projects, is expected. Prior Hematology or Oncology experience is desirable, although not required. A Family Practice or Primary Care degree is acceptable for this position.
Requirements:
- Master’s or Doctorate degree from an Accreditation Commission for Nursing (ACEN) and/or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited graduate school of nursing in Pediatric Acute care, Pediatric primary care or Family Medicine OR Master’s degree from nationally accredited ARC-PA program
- Current BLS certification for Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association or obtained by start date
- Current State of Arizona certification as a Nurse Practitioner OR Current State of Arizona certification as a Physician Assistant or obtained by start date
- National board certification to match area of education OR maintain certificate in National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
