Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a specialized complex support work for a growing caseload of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). The incumbent is expected to maintain a courteous and cooperative working relationship with staff and the public in a diverse environment. Work requires independent judgement and decision making and must follow specific federally regulated procedures. Work is performed at the Florida Department of Health in Osceola County at one of our sites.
Interview participants to determine initial and continuing program eligibility based on income, residency and federal and state guidelines and procedures. Performs client registration, update demographics, verify FMMIS eligibility, verify and document income, collect racial and ethnicity information for statistical purposes on FL-WISE.
Issue WIC benefits to eligible participants, issue new and /or replacement cards and explain EBT card usage and benefits. Inform participants about certification period and schedule follow up appointments using an on-line appointment system to schedule clients for correct appointment type at correct time intervals. Dispense the appropriate type and amount of in-stock special formula. Issues quarterly newsletter to clients for secondary low risk nutrition education contact according to DHM 150-24. Ensures that the Florida voter registration processes are completed accurately.
Obtain and record accurate anthropometric and hematological data. Verify client immunization status using FL-WISE, FL SHOTS or other documentation. Ensure that all high-risk clients are referred to the nutritionist when noted on the alert screen. Responsible for inputting nutrition questionnaire into FL-WISE Submit monthly inventory of lab supplies. Cleans lab equipment and area on a daily basis. Maintains universal precautions in completing clinic functions. Follows established guidelines and standards for safety and preventing exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
Assists in increasing participation by contacting clients from assigned reports (including but not limited to “Local Agency Message Response Report” or “Clients Eligible for Benefits”.
Provide referrals to appropriate health departments services, other state programs and/or applicable community agencies and organizations.
Attend and participate in staff development training and in-service training sessions as well as regularly departmental staff meetings
Responsible for keeping current with and timely submission of e-mails, timesheet and EARS
Performs related duties as required by supervisor
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Accurate typing skills, basic mathematical skills, customer service skills, telephone etiquette, computer skills, investigative/cross referencing, basic filing skills, basic knowledge of nutrition education and breastfeeding education. Ability to perform with accuracy: data entry, income eligibility, anthropometric measurements, CDC growth chart plotting and iron screening blood tests (hematological data). Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and knowledge of time management principles to accomplish daily workflow
Qualifications:
- A current Florida Department of Health employee
- At least 2 years experience working in a WIC clinic
- At least 2 years experience working in a lab obtaining height, weight and hemoglobin
- Completion of all 5 modules of the Florida Nutrition Training Guide
- Willing to rotate within different sites and work extended hours if needed
- Willing to perform emergency duty during disasters, before, during and/or beyond normal working hours or days
- Experience working with HMS, FL-Shots, or FMMIS
- Experience in WIC or FL-Wise
Preferred -
- At least 2 years experience scheduling client appointments using an online system
