POSITION SUMMARYThis individual's work involves the application of technical knowledge in a medical field for the purpose of examination and treatment of patients by the attending physician and for research. An employee in this class selects equipment for use in ultrasound setups according to the patient, and instructs and assists patients in assuming physical position for required exposure to ultrasonic waves.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES- Performs ultrasound examinations, abdominal scans, retroperitoneal scans, obstetrics and gynecology scans, radiation therapy localization for treatment planning, and other anatomical areas as required, and minor surgical procedures.
- Schedules cases to coordinate with other patient examinations; positions and transfers patients; lifts, moves, and transports patients.
- Selects proper technical factors on an individual patient basis; selects and operates equipment as directed, develops film by automatic processing, and assists physician in administering medicines.
- Maintains records of examination data and other pertinent information on patients. Consults with others to obtain a complete clinical history and gathers pertinent clinical data.
- Secures and returns supplies as well as patient folders in order to ensure proper maintenance.
- Performs other duties as directed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS- High school or equivalent plus completion of a full-time training course for ultrasound technicians as approved by the American Medical Association and two years’ experience under the direction and supervision of a radiologist or other medical officer.
- Professionally registered with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES- Knowledge of equipment used in ultrasound setups.
- Knowledge of procedures used in performing ultrasound exams.
- Knowledge of the anatomy and anatomical relationships and cross-sectional anatomy in all body planes.
- Ability to operate ultrasound diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to relate with tact and understand to deal with patients, doctors, staff, and all other persons contacted during the course of work.
- Ability to employ sound judgment in the planning and execution of assigned duties.
- Knowledge of the policies, procedures, rules and regulations that apply to the practice in an inpatient care setting.
- Knowledge of hospital/departmental policies and procedures, emergency protocols, Joint Commission, Center for Medicare and Medicaid services, and all other local and federal regulatory standards.
- Ability to make presentations before management, public groups, and staff.
- Knowledge of analytical and grammatical skills necessary to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Familiarity with spreadsheet and overall computer skills.
- Ability to work with a wide variety of other professionals and staff engaged in the delivery of health care services.
- Ability to recognize and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to gain the confidence and respect of the public to be served.
- Ability to work well independently, including without administrative support when required.
- Organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills are essential.
- Ability to work in a highly visible position undergoing significant changes with multiple constituents, each with demands exceeding resources.
WORKING CONDITIONSWork in a climate-controlled and well-lighted environment with a smoke-free policy. Employee will work in an office and throughout the building daily. Has Category 1 risk of exposure to infectious diseases, but receives training in hand hygiene practices, Universal Precautions, and has access to personal protective equipment if direct exposure is anticipated; is subject to interruptions and noise daily.
