Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, MD is hiring for a Lab Technician - Certified Phlebotomist for the Pathology Department.
Schedule:
- Monday - Friday
- Day Shift
- 8am - 4:30pm
Pay Range: $19 - $24
Responsibilities:
- Collects specimens from adult and pediatric patients. May include complex cases, working in restricted or isolation environments and/or collecting specimens from difficult patients.
- Regularly verifies and obtains correct specimen types.
- Understands and consistently demonstrates different approaches between adult and pediatric specimen collection.
- Understands proper patient identification procedures when working with a parent or guardian.
- Recognizes cases that require additional support; which may include communicating and working closely with physician, nurses or clinical staff on units following department protocols.
- Collects laboratory specimens from patients using collection techniques specific to the area (for example: Arterial blood gas, Venipuncture, Capillary Collection, Butterfly, Central Line, Blood Cultures, Micro containers, Hickman Catheter, Sweat Collection, Urine Clean Catch, Timed Urines, etc.).
- Performs complicated collection techniques and peripheral IV site blood draws.
- Consistently utilizes proper technique for specimen collection according to departmental procedures and protocols.
- Consistently utilizes proper sterile technique for specimen collection of both pediatric and adult blood cultures.
- Consistently and proficiently performs the blood collection technique of heel and finger stick utilizing micro containers.
- Performs venipuncture for blood collection for up to 30 tubes.
- Maintains necessary supply inventory, restocks, and ensures work area and supplies are ready for next use. Ensures a clean and sanitary work environment.
- Prepares basic laboratory reagents.
- Decontaminates and/or properly disposes of laboratory waste, biohazard waste, and sharps.
- Obtains information, enters and communicates data in patient files, laboratory information systems and related devices.
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum of a High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
Lab Tech I:
- At least 6 months of experience is highly preferred.
Lab Tech II:
- Two years of experience as a Lab Technician -OR- 6 months of experience and a current Phlebotomy Certification (ASCP-PBT, CPhT, or equivalent).
