Advanced Practice Professional (Physician Assistant) Oculoplastic Surgery
This is an Advanced Practice Professional (APP) job opening.
Both qualified NP and PA applicants will be considered.
A total of one (1), 1.0 FTE Advanced Practice Professional (either NP or PA) will be hired to fill this job opening.
Job Summary
The Kellogg Eye Center seeks to improve lives through curing, preventing, and treating eye disease.
The Oculoplastic Surgery team is seeking a qualified APP to join the practice supporting clinic and first assist in the operating room. In this position, under the direction of the attending surgeon, the APP will evaluate and manage the pre-op and post-op care in clinic for ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery patients. Strong procedural technique, manual dexterity, and clinic exam skills will be applied for direct patient care involving clinic appointments, eyelid lesion clinic procedures, and first assist in the OR.
Responsibilities*
- Evaluation and assessment of adult and pediatric oculoplastic surgery patients, including those with a history of trauma, oncologic and congenital anomalies.
- Provide surgical assistance to ophthalmic cases, including perioperative care.
- Management of post-op care and long-term/chronic care patients in coordination with supervising surgeons as part of a collaborative team.
- Consultation and completion of clinic procedures utilizing excellent manual dexterity.
- Evaluation and determination of patient eligibility for eyelid surgery.
- Pre-operative disease-based patient education and review of surgical consents with patients and families.
- Identification, ordering, and monitoring of appropriate pharmacologic agents.
- Documenting care according to the Michigan Medicine standards with associated billing codes where appropriate.
- Occasional inpatient rounding.
Required Qualifications*
Required Qualifications (NP):
- Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Michigan.
- Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
- Current specialty certification as an Adult Gero Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
- Current DEA registration required.
- ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center).
Required Qualifications (PA):
- Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.
- Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
- State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required.
- Current DEA registration required.
- ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center).
NOTE: In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.
Desired Qualifications*
- One (1) year of ophthalmology and/or oculoplastic surgery experience as a PA/NP.
- Experience with first assist or performing independent minor procedures including complex wound closure or biopsy.
- APP experience with surgical patient care managing pre-operative and post-operative patients.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision as part of a collaborative team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
Work Schedule
Appointment: 40 hours per week. The schedule may vary based on clinic versus OR coverage by day.
