The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Medical Technologist, located in the Biomedical & Diagnostic Sciences Department. The primary purpose of this entry-level position is to provide technical support by learning and performing routine and specialized clinical laboratory tests in the areas of hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, hemostasis, flow cytometry, blood typing, cross matching, and preparation of cytological samples for evaluation by a pathologist.
Depending on experience and qualifications of successful candidate, individual will be hired in as a Medical Technologist 1, Medical Technologist 2, Senior Medical Technologist 1, or Senior Medical Technologist 2.
Typical Responsibilities:
- Specimen Preparation and Analysis: Accessions and prepares specimens for analysis in the areas of chemistry, coagulation, hematology, and urinalysis. Tests patient samples in chemistry, coagulation, hematology, flow cytometry, blood banking, and urinalysis stations of the lab. Performs manual cell counts on blood smears and fluids. Reports patient results to clinicians and students.
- Instrument Maintenance: Runs daily quality control and calibration as needed on instruments in laboratory. Performs weekly and monthly maintenance on all laboratory instruments. Assists in troubleshooting and correcting problems that arise in procedures and instrumentation. Answers questions regarding test ordering and test requirements. Edits/cancels incorrect orders and assists in preparing send-out tests received. Assists in filing the previous day's specimens and reports, stocking supplies, and cleaning as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or related field
- Completion of an accredited medical technology program
Preferred Qualifications:
- Medical Technologist State of Tennessee License and ASCP Certification (MLT or MLS) preferred.
Work Schedule: This position’s hours are flexible and can range from 30-40 hours/week, but a requirement of the position is 2 evening shifts/week with a strong preference for Thursday and Friday evenings (mandatory hours covered 5-11 pm). The remaining hours are flexible, but will primarily be first shift. Occasional weekend coverage might be required.
