Qualifications
Education and Experience: Possession of a doctorate in veterinary medicine from an approved school of veterinary medicine and experience equivalent to one year of full-time increasingly responsible professional experience as a Veterinarian.
Necessary Special Qualifications: None.
Examination Method: Education and Experience, 100%, for Preferred Service positions.
Overview
Summary: Under general supervision, is responsible for professional veterinary work of considerable difficulty and administrative work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required.
Distinguishing Features: The employee in this class is responsible for assisting in the operations of the Animal Industries Division.
Responsibilities
Performing General Physical Activities:
- Performs bio-security functions, such as cleaning and disinfection of person, clothing, vehicle and equipment.
- Efficiently and humanely restrains animals to collect diagnostic samples, inspect for diseases and proper identification.
- Works under adverse conditions, such as close quarters, inclement weather, and protective clothing.
- Performs various physical activities in handling animals, such as running, bending, reaching, etc.
- Stands for long periods while inspecting and sorting.
- Walks over rough terrain to inspect facilities and animals.
Handling and Moving Objects:
- Works with hazardous objects and materials.
- Performs sample collections using fine motor skills.
- Collects, preserves, and submits evidence or samples.
- Sets up restraint systems for confinement.
- Physically moves and positions animals for diagnostic sampling.
Organizing, Planning, and Prioritizing Work:
- Incorporates last minute and unscheduled tasks into current workload.
- Maintains assigned area with inspectional frequency.
- Organizes weekly workload based on inspections and facility types.
- Prioritizes activities based on risk factors.
- Completes appropriate time summary and projected itinerary.
Making Decisions and Solving Problems:
- Instructs and consults with those under supervision to ensure compliance.
- Investigates potential risks associated with violations.
- Determines severity of violation by reviewing inspection information.
- Recommends regulatory action based on findings.
- Makes recommendations to establishments to resolve violations.
Documenting/Recording Information:
- Obtains signed statements from complainants and witnesses.
- Fills out forms to document findings or activities.
- Completes laboratory submission forms for testing.
- Enters time and labor information electronically.
Updating and Using Relevant Knowledge:
- Completes technical training on disease investigation.
- Maintains current knowledge of laws and regulations.
- Continuously updates inspection manual.
- Attends meetings to discuss current trends and policies.
Communicating with Persons Outside Organization:
- Collaborates with other regulatory agencies during investigations.
- Communicates with the public, government, and external sources.
- Exchanges animal health information with government agencies.
- Ensures questions and complaints are directed appropriately.
Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates:
- Submits work documents to verify completion.
- Conducts performance evaluation discussions.
- Communicates with those under supervision for scheduling.
- Informs manager of work activities.
Monitor Processes, Materials, or Surroundings:
- Inspects animals for health and compliance.
- Monitors disease surveillance information.
- Monitors facilities for compliance with laws.

- Investigates animal health events.
- Contacts stakeholders for animal health information.

- Visually inspects animals for signs of diseases.
- Inspects records of animal breeders and dealers.
- Inspects premises and facilities for compliance.

- Participates in state animal emergency response team.
- Schedules activities as needed to meet business needs.
