OverviewWorks under the supervision of OR leadership. Assists with the coordination of nursing care of the patient in the operating room and functions as a team member of the surgical team. Responsible for the preparation and maintenance of equipment, instrumentation and supplies on the sterile field. Requires utilization of simple to complex equipment. Requires the cleaning and replenishment of equipment and supplies in order to maintain quality patient care. Participates in quality patient assurance, in-service and customer service programs. Responsible for the handling and management of specimens and surgical counts. Assumes the role of expert for specific surgical service, is responsible for monitoring the surgical schedule for equipment and supply needs, prepares for daily case readiness, supports the Specialty Nurse with the surgeon preference cards, and for identifying, communicating, and educating service changes. Expected to float among RHS facilities and perform like competencies. Surgical privileges are established by the surgery department and medical staff and approved by the governing body.
What you will do- Collaborates with physicians to provide for the specialized needs of the surgical patient. Builds trusting collaborative relationship with surgeons to ensure optimal outcomes. Anticipates supply equipment needs in advance so that arrangements can be made in a timely and cost effective manner.
- Monitor and support personal and departmental needs to include flexing and shift changes to meet the needs of the department. Uses time in a productive manner.
- Demonstrates a surgical conscience by maintaining an aseptic environment during the surgical procedure and by recording breaks in technique per AORN Standards. Demonstrates consistent proficient knowledge of procedure specific utilization of instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Responsible for assuring safe practices as referenced in the National Patient Safety Goals and by following RHS policies and procedures, as well as guidelines outlined in AORN, CMS, and DNV. Identifies and reports noncompliance or violations appropriately.
- Ensures preference cards are maintained and updated by consistently communicating changes to appropriate team members.
- Demonstrates the ability to build collaborative professional relationships with a multi-disciplinary team to support patient care needs.
- Participates and provides feedback in supply utilization, new equipment/product evaluations; identifying and recommending solutions for cost containment and waste reduction.
- Participates positively in training and support of all team members, volunteers and students.
- Actively supports and assists the perioperative registered nurse and team in the care of the patients. Demonstrates responsibility for accurate handling/management of specimens and surgical count. Demonstrates a sense of urgency to facilitate positive customer throughout the department/facility. Addresses customers' needs regardless of assignment.
QualificationsEducation- Program Graduate, Surgical Technology (Preferred)
Experience- 1 year Experience in surgical tech (Preferred)
Licenses and Certifications- Surgical Technologist - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) Licensed as Surgical Technologist with State of Virginia Upon Hire (Required)
- CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) within 90 Days (Required)
- Certified Surgical Tech (CST) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Upon Hire (Required)
- Tech in Surgery - National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) Upon Hire (Required)
