Job Overview: The phlebotomist demonstrates good collection techniques that result in decreased incidents of hemolysis and clotting.
Qualifications:
- Must have High School diploma or equivalent
- Must have phlebotomy certification
- Must have a minimum of 1 year experience in phlebotomy
- Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for a minimum of 60 minutes
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs
Preferred:
- Laboratory experience a plus
Scheduling Requirements:
- Per Diem
- Day Shift
- Required to work weekends as part of the standard phlebotomy rotation schedule
Essential Functions:
- Patient Identification:
Assures that staff properly identify patients utilizing two points of reference; full name and Medical Record number or Date of Birth. Consistently matches information on the patient identification band with information on the paperwork and specimen labels. Confirms that staff are engaging in active patient identification (Asking the patient their full name). Understands and teaches that patient identification is the MOST important aspect of blood collection. - Specimen Labeling:
Performs follow-up on staff to assure that samples are consistently labeled using the 5 required pieces of information needed on the Specimen (Full Name, Med Record Number, Date, Time, Initials of collector). Via direct observations, assures specimens are consistently labeled in the presence of the patient. Follows up on incidents of mislabeling. - Specimen Collection:
Uses appropriate collection devices for each patient. Consistently utilizes the correct Order of Draw. Demonstrates sound understanding of which tubes are required for testing. Demonstrates good collection techniques that result in decreased incidents of hemolysis and clotting. Demonstrates sound understanding of specimen integrity issues. Demonstrates prompt response to collection requests. Demonstrates effective capillary collection techniques. Issues correct fluid and urine containers with proper labels. - Infection Control:
Assures effective handwashing within the section. Confirms that staff use and dispose of gloves as per procedure. Confirms that staff use and dispose of sharps as per procedure. Demonstrates understanding and working knowledge of Standard Precautions. Takes part in in-services as needed to address variance in infection rates (e.g. Blood Cultures, etc).
