A veterinary Technician is of equal importance to the running of a clinic or hospital as any other member of staff including doctors. However, as a member of the medical team, the responsibilities and expectations are equally high. The duties expected of all members of the technician team are as follows:
- Greeting clients warmly and professionally in exam rooms
- Taking vials and asking about patient status in exam rooms
- Relaying clients' concerns and questions to the doctor along with all information regarding patient health
- Assisting doctors and clients in the exam room during physical exams, administration of vaccines, and/or prescribing/ administering medication to appropriate patients
- Bringing patients into the back treatment area for drop-off and/or hospitalization
- Preparing patients for surgery: taking vitals, placing IV catheters, knowing the rate of fluids the patient should be on
- Monitoring patients' vitals during procedures requiring sedation/anesthesia
- Ensuring patients recover from anesthesia post-procedure
- Restraining patients for placement of catheters, x-rays, sedations, etc.
- Maintaining composure and discipline in emergency situations
- Maintaining a clean work environment for the portrayal of a professional and functioning hospital
- Following the instructions of the doctors
- Knowledge of proper procedures
- Willingness to continue learning
Certification as a veterinary assistant or veterinary technician is highly recommended, but not required at the moment (subject to change based on New Jersey state law regarding who may work under said job description). This certification is required in most other states.
