JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Performs assigned patient care and observation duties under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or LPN, including but not limited to: cleaning the patient's room, operating various clinical equipment, helping with emergencies, assisting with patient procedures, collecting and transporting patient specimens and completing applicable forms.
- Communicates with patients, families and members of the patient care team.
- Maintains hospital and unit-specific competencies.
- As part of a patient-focused service, promotes a supportive and healing environment so that customer and staff satisfaction are enhanced.
- Assists in emergency situations as directed by an RN/LPN.
- Ensures that prescribed measures related to hygiene, comfort, and rest are provided.
- Complies with Standard Precautions guidelines, Infection Control procedures, and safety standards to maintain and promote a clean and healthy work environment.
- Assists in the use of bag-valve-mask device, anti-embolism stockings, pneumatic compression stockings, oxygen, suction equipment, incentive spirometer, emergency cart and bedside glucose monitoring machine.
- Operates converter chair, lifts, scales, beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, non-invasive BP monitors, automatic thermometer, sphygmomanometer, pulse oximeter, and computers.
- Records patient intake and output.
- Assists RN/LPN in providing patient care according to individual needs by assisting with range of motion, ambulation, patient transfers, diet, elimination and hygiene.
- Observes and reports significant or unusual information about the patient and environment to the RN/LPN and documents appropriately and in a timely manner.
- Transports patients and patient specimens throughout the hospital as needed.
- Contributes to the completion of patient admission, transfer, and discharge.
- Assists with postmortem care.
- Utilizes appropriate technology to complete all related processes.
- Participates in unit-based and system-wide Performance Improvement program as required by department leadership.
- Serves as a resource/model through compliance with standards of care and with Department of Nursing and Hospital policies and procedures.
- May participate in research projects impacting patient care areas.
- Participates in the orientation of nursing support assistants to the unit.
- Performs other related responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- BLS required.
- Must meet one of the following requirements:
- One year of direct patient care experience,
- Successful completion of a nursing assistant training course
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license through State of Georgia, OR
- Current enrollment in a nursing program and completion of 2 clinical rotations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
(Medium-Heavy) 36-75lbs, 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 20-35lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 10-20lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 75lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 35lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking; Occasional sitting; Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing); Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
