Job Summary:
The Pediatric Cardiac Sonographer functions under the direction of the Lead/Chief Technologist/Manager and is responsible for performing cardiac ultrasound for infants, children, and teenagers with congenital heart defects or acquired cardiac diseases. Performs measurements and calculations according to laboratory protocol, provides written or verbal summary of the preliminary findings to the interpreting physician, and is responsible for the safety and well-being of all patients in the department. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with the patients(s), family, and health care team. Will also perform other assigned duties, and travel to other WellStar locations may be required.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Ultrasound Testing:
- Performs pre-procedure verification process, according to hospital policy
- Performs pediatric cardiac ultrasound testing according to protocol
- Performs fetal cardiac advanced testing according to protocol
- Performs appropriate measurements and calculations according to laboratory protocol
- Performs blood pressures
- Uses independent judgment during the ultrasound exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings
- Accurately enters required information into Epic Structured Reporting fields or MergeCardio PACS
- Prepares preliminary reports and contacts physician, when required, according to laboratory policy and procedure
- Appropriately identifies procedure performed for accurate charging
- Performs other duties as required
Organization, Quality and Team Responsibilities:- Organizes daily work assignments
- Stocks supplies and assists with ordering supplies
- Assists with QA/QC within the lab
- Supports and assists in development of performance and process improvement initiatives designed to promote highest quality patient care
- Performs clerical duties as required
- Ensures the equipment is in working order. Performs routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and reports any equipment malfunction to Chief Technologist or Lab Manager
- Maintains strictest confidentiality concerning participants and families' medical and personal information
Patient Care:- Addresses problems with patient care, as they arise, and works to appropriately resolve
- Performs basic patient care tasks, as needed
- Maintains professional credentials and required CME hours
- Maintains strictest confidentiality concerning participants and families' medical and personal information
Holter and Event Monitors:- Places cardiac monitors on patients and maintains monitor logs and EPIC documentation
- Educates the patients on the function of the monitor and how to record symptoms or events that occur while wearing the monitor
- Registers the patients online for the event monitors
- Communicates with doctors and nurses regarding significant events found on 30-day monitors
- Returns patients' phone calls regarding monitors
Performs other duties as assigned and complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Trade School Diploma/Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography - Preferred
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
- Registered Medical Sonographer
- Basic Life Support (BLS) - Instructor
- Pediatric Emergency Assessment or Registered Congenital Cardiac Sonographer or Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer
Required Minimum Experience:
Minimum 1 year Experience performing pediatric cardiac ultrasound exams - Preferred
