SUMMARY OF POSITION:
This job is responsible for providing direct patient care as part of a perioperative (operating room) team, assisting the operating surgeon by performing activities such as maintaining hemostasis, providing wound exposure, manipulating tissues with surgical instrumentation (e.g. suturing, wound closure) and other related tasks. An incumbent uses acquired and intuitive knowledge to anticipate, prevent and/or respond to circumstances that could compromise the patient's well-being; documents patient/family pre-operative care and teaching, operative roles following surgical procedure, post-operative care/assessment and discharge planning in accordance with established guidelines. Work is performed under the direction of an operating surgeon and within scope of practice.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing
- Currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse by state of employment or holds a multistate RN license through the interstate Nurse Licensure Compact
- Successful completion of an accredited/approved postgraduate RN First Assistant education program (acceptable to the Association of Operating Room Nurses [AORN] and that meets the statutes, regulations and organizational standards relevant to RNFA credentialing standards)
- Four (4) years of diversified OR nursing work experience (e.g. scrub and/or circulator) in an acute care setting that would demonstrate attainment of the requisite job knowledge/skills.
- Current licensure as a registered nurse by the State Board of Nursing required.
- Certification in operating room nursing (CNOR) required.
- Current BLS Certification required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION(S):
Certification as an RN-First Assistant (CRNFA) preferred.
